The Vietnamese swimmer finished first with a time of 4:18.10 to take a gold medal. His new record was more than two seconds better than the 4:20.65 he set at the previous Games in the Philippines. It is also the new national record of Việt Nam. Nguyên was left behind in the first 100m butterfly but he came back in the second lap of backstroke and pulled ahead in the last two laps. (Photo: VNA) Quang Ninh – Athlete Pham Tien San won the first gold medal in Duathlon for Vietnam at the 31st SEA Games on May 15 on Tuan Chau beach in the northern province of Quang Ninh. San finished first in the competition with a time of 1:55:58. Ferbriade Rudi and Johan Jauhari, both of Indonesia, secured the silver and bronze medals a time of 1:56:12 and 1:57: 36, respectively. 31-year-old San had won three silver medals at SEA Games held in 2013, 2015 and 2017. Thirteen male athletes from seven regional countries took part in the event. The Duathlon event at SEA Games 31 has two sets of medals for men's and women's individual events. Vietnam discovers two new strains of SARS-CoV-2 from imported cases

Van Dinh Trang, Head of the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Ward under the hospital, told the Suc khoe & Doi song (Health and Life) newspaper that the B.1.222 variant had appeared in 11 countries, but was most common in the UK and particularly Scotland. This strain has many mutations on the spike protein different from the Indian strain B.1.617.2. Variant B.1.222 was discovered when the hospital’s COVID-19 research team sequenced the SARS-CoV-2 gene from the oropharyngeal specimen of a 29-year-old patient, a Ukrainian expert. Among the 57 domestically-transmitted cases, 39 were found in Bac Giang province, 13 in the neighbouring province of Bac Ninh, two in Da Nang, one in in Lang Son, and two in Tan Trieu facility of the Vietnam National Cancer Hospital. The latest cases have brought the national count of domestic infections to 3,462, with 1,892 detected since the new wave of the pandemic started in the country on April 27. The recoveries now stand at 2,689, while the number of fatalities is 41. Among the patients under treatment, 63 have tested negative for the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 once, 34 twice, and 23 thrice. Sản was initially a 3000m steeplechase runner who won silver at three previous SEA Games in 2013, 2015 and 2017, but switched to the duathlon over a year ago. He finished the combined 10km running, 40km cycling and 5km running with a time of 1hr 55.57 min on Tuần Châu Island, Quảng Ninh Province.
