Contest invites one minute films on climate change By Tuong Vi in HCMC For the second year, the British Council is partnering with the global campaign 1 Minute to Save the World, a competition for filmmakers. Young film-makers from around the world can take part in the international film competition by entering one minute films on regional climate change by December 17. The films will be shown on the internet, at targeted political screenings and film festivals worldwide. Winning films will be screened in front of world leaders at the COP16, an international summit on climate change and be part of an on-line campaign going out to millions of viewers. VN director to compete in Shanghai film festival
VN director to compete in Shanghai film festival (09-06-2005) SHANGHAI — overseas Vietnamese director Ho Quang Minh film Thoi Xa Vang (A Distant Past) will go to the upcoming 8th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), June 11-19, to compete for the Jin Jue Award. This is the first time SIFF has selected a Vietnamese film. The film Cua Roi (Dropped Gift), from director Vuong Duc, didn't make it last year, as there was no English version. Under the Jin Jue Award, the following categories are up for consideration: Best Feature Film, Jury Grand Prix, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Music. The judge panel will determine the winners from about 17 films, including Thoi Xa Vang. The film won the Silver Kite award from the Viet Nam Cinematography Association last year, as well as several prizes at international film festivals, and is expected to make the Munich Film Festival and another in India later this year. Local director debuts at film fest (29-11-2005) A film by a first-time female director will represent Viet Nam at the International Short Film Competition, taking place from December 1 to 11 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nguyen Hoang Diep, 23, recently graduated from Ha Noi College of Stage and Cinematography. Her film, Mua Thu Nam (The Fifth Season), received the jury's highest marks at the college's annual competition held for graduating students. Diep's script first won the top prize at a 2004 competition organised by the Ha Noi-based TDP (Cinematographic Talent Development Centre), which consequently gave the director VND20 million (US$1,250) to realise the film. The completed product is one of 45 shorts chosen from over 2,100 to be shown at the international competition. Tribeca Film Festival opens in New York
NEW YORK - New York's Tribeca Film Festival, created a decade ago after the 9/11 attacks, opens on Thursday with a touch of sparkle from Cannes thanks to new artistic director Frederic Boyer. Boyer joined festival founders Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal for an opening presentation on Wednesday in lower Manhattan where movies will be shown until April 29. The 89 films, including 50 world premiers, and 60 short films were selected from 46 countries for Tribeca. Boyer, who was recently in charge of the Directors' Fortnight at the much bigger Cannes festival, said he sees room for Tribeca to expand. "In Cannes there's a lot of pressure, because it's the biggest festival in the world and it's also a market. Most people don't want to miss Cannes for strategic and financial reasons," he said. "Now, people ask themselves, 'Why not do Tribeca?' You can do a premiere here, there's huge media and the US public."
