Starting in October 2023, the 27 member countries of the European Union initiated a pilot for carbon taxation on all exports to their market using the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The US will be the next market to implement carbon taxation on imports in 2024, and in the future, many more countries in the Americas and Asia are expected to follow this trend. Dollar surges on black market
Unofficial exchange points sold the greenback at VND24,550, up 0.41% from Sunday. Vietcombank kept the greenback unchanged at VND24,460. The State Bank of Vietnam lowered its reference rate by 0.12% to VND24,059. The dollar has increased over the dongn by 3.08% since the beginning of the year. Globally the dollar kicked off the last quarter of the year on the front foot on Monday as the prospect of higher-for-longer U.S. rates provided solid support, pushing the yen to an 11-month low, Reuters reported. Currency moves were subdued in early Asia trade with parts of Australia out for a holiday and China away for its Golden Week, though analysts said a narrowly-averted U.S. government shutdown could bring some relief to markets. Thailand awaits Chinese tourist influx after visa waiver
With effect from September 25 and until February next year the government has temporarily waived visas for mainland Chinese visitors in a bid to boost tourism during the peak year-end season. During this five-month period it expects to attract 2.9 million Chinese travelers, Chai said on the Royal Thai Government Facebook page. More than 220,000 Chinese visitors arrived in the first two days after the waiver started. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin wrote on social network X, formerly Twitter, on September 30: "Thailand is very pleased to welcome all tourists from China. Our country has many beautiful beaches and diverse Thai cuisine. I hope everyone will have a safe and impressive trip."
