Vietnam envisions low-carbon agricultural sector

Bình Thuận Province boosts agriculture with irrigation works

The south-central province is one of the country’s driest and has inclement weather and little rainfall. Most farming areas face a shortage of water in the dry season and farmers used to grow only one rice crop a year. To mitigate the water shortage, the province built many irrigation works in the past years, and this is enabling rice farmers to grow more crops every year and get better yields. The Sông Quao reservoir in Hàm Thuận Bắc District was one of the first irrigation works, with construction beginning in 1988 and taking 10 years due to the difficult conditions and weather. The Hanoi government will improve mechanisms and policies to encourage the participation of the private sector in the field of high-tech agriculture. PepsiCo Foundation funds expansion of She Feeds the World programme

The MoU was signed between the Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture in Vietnam, the National Agriculture Extension, and CARE, paving the way forward for the rollout of the Farming for Change – She Feeds the World project in Vietnam (SFtW Vietnam). The project aims to ensure small-scale farmers in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, particularly women and ethnic minorities, have more secure and resilient livelihoods for food, nutrition, and water security. The Central Highlands in Vietnam are a major agricultural hub, producing key food crops. However, the agricultural system in the region faces serious environmental, economic, and societal issues, including unsustainable agricultural practices and weak market linkage.
