Why south korea and north korea divided

Biden nominates North Korea human rights envoy, first since 2017

January 24, 2023 by e.vnexpress.net

President Joe Biden nominated Julie Turner, a long-time diplomat and current director of the Office of East Asia and the Pacific in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the Department of State, the White House said in a statement. She speaks Korean and has previously worked on North Korean human rights as a special assistant in the envoy's office, the statement said. The special envoy position - and a similar one in South Korea - had become controversial as preceding administrations tried to bring North Korea to the negotiating table. Some activists said human rights had been shunted aside in favor of national security priorities. Biden vowed repeatedly after taking office in 2021 that human rights would be at the center of his foreign policy, but the position had remained vacant. South Korea's ambassador on North Korean human rights expressed disappointment last year that Biden's administration had yet to appoint an envoy for the issue at the time. Formula milk import from South Korea to Viet Nam reached $19.54 million in 2021, an increase of 260 per cent from the same figure in 2016. Trade between Vietnam and Korea surges by $9 billion

January 25, 2023 by vir.com.vn

Trade between Vietnam and Korea surged by almost $9 billion This import-export total is less than the approximately $1 billion that Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) recently reported. During this period, Vietnam's exports to this market increased by 10.2 per cent, while imports increased by 11 per cent, and the country's trade deficit with Korea remained at $38.3 billion. Vietnam is implementing three free trade agreements (FTAs) with Korea, which is a substantial boost for Vietnamese products seeking to enter the Korean market. Noteworthy is the Vietnam-Korea Free Trade Agreement (VKFTA), which went into force at the end of 2015 and is producing considerable benefits for import and export operations by using the preferred tariffs of businesses in the two countries. After more than six years of VKFTA implementation, bilateral commerce between Vietnam and Korea has steadily increased. Statistics from the MOTIE show that bilateral commerce between … [Read more...] about Trade between Vietnam and Korea surges by $9 billion

January 26, 2023 by e.vnexpress.net

Gross domestic product (GDP) shrank 0.4% in the October-December period from the previous quarter, the Bank of Korea estimated, after a 0.3% gain in the July-September quarter. Economists in a Reuters poll had expected a 0.3% fall. Fourth-quarter 2022 GDP was 1.4% higher than a year earlier, compared with a 3.1% annual gain seen in the third quarter and the 1.5% forecast in the poll. The central bank estimated that in 2022 the full-year value of the economy, Asia's fourth-largest, had been 2.6% larger than in 2021, when it showed growth of 4.1%. The average growth in full-year GDP for 2017 to 2021 was 2.3% a year. The central bank's latest growth forecast for 2023 full-year GDP is 1.7%, but its warning this month that it might downgrade that outlook prompted … [Read more...] about South Korean economy shrinks in Q4 for first time in 2-1/2 years

January 19, 2023 by e.vnexpress.net

After Vietnam lost the AFF Cup final to Thailand on Monday night, Park gave an online interview with South Korean media. He expressed regret for not being able to win a second AFF Cup title with the team and for having to say goodbye to the players. He also revealed that there may be a possibility he could continue working with Vietnamese football in another role. What are your thoughts after finishing five years with Vietnamese football? I have finished my final tournament with Vietnamese football, and it's a shame that we could only come in second. The players tried their best. Although I have some regrets, I'm deeply grateful for them. It's heartbreaking to say goodbye to the players. I know that in life, it's normal to come and go, and parting ways with the team is a necessary decision for the development of Vietnamese football. Now is the time to organize my thoughts and navigate a new path. Five years is not a short time. When did you feel like it was time to stop? … [Read more...] about Parting ways with Vietnam a necessary choice: coach Park

Global tech investors continue to bet on Vietnam

January 16, 2023 by e.vnexpress.net

Apple supplier BOE Technology Group plans to invest US$400 million to build two factories in Vietnam, Reuters reported recently. It is in talks to lease land in the north to put up factories to add to its relatively small plant in the south that supplies mostly television screens to South Korea's Samsung and LG Electronics, the report said. BOE is the latest tech company to eye Vietnam as its next manufacturing hub, where already smartphones, laptops and cameras are made by or for multinationals such as Samsung and Apple. In the north, where Apple suppliers such as Luxshare and Foxconn already have a presence, BOE will lease 100 hectares to build a $150-million plant for making remote control systems on 20 ha and others for manufacturing displays. BOE will invest $250 million in a plant on 50 ha while suppliers will use the remaining 30 ha. Everything will be in place by 2025. The company plans to make the more sophisticated organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, screens … [Read more...] about Global tech investors continue to bet on Vietnam
