Some 59.1 million people were registered as internally displaced worldwide in 2021 -- an all-time record expected to be broken again this year amid mass displacement inside war-torn Ukraine. Around 38 million new internal displacements were reported in 2021, with some people forced to flee multiple times during the year, according to a joint report by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). That marks the second-highest annual number of new internal displacements in a decade after 2020, which saw record-breaking movement due to a string of natural disasters. Last year, new internal displacements from conflict surged to 14.4 million -- marking a 50-percent jump from 2020 and more than doubling since 2012, the report showed. In the memory of Hoang Ngoc, an 85-year-old man in Tan Lap village in Tan Trao commune, Uncle Ho was a great and homely person. Despite his busy schedule as head of the country, he spent time with soldiers and farmers, encouraging them to boost production. “Uncle Ho built an embankment so that the fields would be dry. At that time, we did not know he was Uncle Ho. He was the eldest in the revolutionary delegation to Tuyen Quang, so we called him Sir Ke (old person), and Sir Revolutionary Ke,” Ngoc said. Floods kill 25 in India’s Assam, displace thousands
GUWAHATI, India -- Flash floods and landslides in India's northeast Assam state killed at least 25 people and displaced over 650,000 from their homes in the past 10 days, officials said on Tuesday. Heavy monsoons are a yearly occurrence in Assam, resulting in flooding and landslides which force residents to flee their homes, often leaving behind their belongings. The Brahmaputra River, one of the largest rivers in the world which flows from Tibet to India and finally into Bangladesh, burst its banks in Assam, inundating more than 1,800 villages in 26 districts this month. "Twenty people have died in separate incidents of drowning and five more were killed in landslides in the past 10 days," said Pijush Hazarika, Assam's water resources minister, adding that water levels were receding.
