Poxy McPoxface, TRUMP-22 or Mpox: these some of the ideas sent in by the public to the World Health Organization as it seeks a new name for monkeypox. Often disease names are chosen behind closed doors by a technical committee, but the WHO has this time decided to open up the process to the public. After a slow start, dozens of submissions have now been made from a range of contributors including academics, doctors, and a gay community activist. They range from the technical (OPOXID-22, submitted by Harvard Medical School emergency physician Jeremy Faust) to the farcical (Poxy McPoxface, submitted by Andrew Yi in an allusion to Boaty McBoatface - almost the name of a British polar research vessel after a public vote on the choice). Pressure is growing for a new name for the disease, in part because critics say it is misleading, since monkeys are not the original animal host. A group of leading scientists wrote a position paper in June calling for a name that was "neutral, … [Read more...] about WHO vows nothing ‘ridiculous’ as public submits ideas to rename monkeypox

Communication matters immensely in combating Monkeypox: CDC
International health experts said that education and accurate messaging are critical to avoid stigma in dealing with Monkeypox outbreaks. Communication plays a crucial role in controlling Monkeypox, a viral zoonosis with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, said Eric Dziuban, Country Director for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vietnam. Hospitals are not dojos for doctors to practice self-defense
In 2002 a patient was admitted to our hospital with a severe stomachache and died despite our best efforts. The patient's family burst in brandishing knives and threatened to slash anyone wearing a white coat. Doctors and nurses had to take off their coats and make a run for it. Many years ago one of my colleagues received threats and gangsters waited outside the emergency ward for days. The colleague was forced to go in and out of the hospital through a landfill and the backdoor. One of the latest incidents happened late last month at the Gia Dinh People's Hospital in HCMC. A child choked on a fish bone and was brought to the hospital. All of her vital signs were normal and there were no signs of distress. The child was told to sit and wait until a specialist from the otorhinolaryngology department came and removed the bone. But five minutes later a doctor in the emergency ward was checking the CT scan of another patient when the girl's father came in, pushed him against the … [Read more...] about Hospitals are not dojos for doctors to practice self-defense
Vietnam detects more Omicron sub-variants
Illustrative photo Health workers said that the development of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country become more complicated with an increasing number of Covid-19 cases. Beforehand, BA.2.75 has also since been detected in about 10 other countries, including the UK, US, Australia, Germany, and Canada at the beginning of July. Studies show that variant BA.2.75 has multiple mutations in the gene encoding for the spike protein of the virus. That is the part of the virus that sticks out and binds to the host cell receptor. Those mutations allow the virus to bind to that receptor more efficiently, meaning it can infect human cells better. It also has mutations that may make your antibodies, which are generated in response to vaccination, less able to bind or neutralize the virus. Once again, there is some concern that this virus may be able to spread quickly and evade immunity from vaccination or prior infection. The Department of Preventive Medicine also said that the country … [Read more...] about Vietnam detects more Omicron sub-variants
Vietnam turns focus to monkeypox drugs
Drugs in which tecovirimat, brincidofvir, cidofovir, and probenecid are active ingredients are recommended by WHO to treat the viral disease. Monkeypox vaccines have also been approved for distribution in several countries. The Drug Administration of Vietnam on Wednesday called on drug companies to find and import ingredients and produce the drugs. Meanwhile, it would prioritize approval documents for the import and distribution of these drugs and their ingredients. WHO has declared a global health emergency over the monkeypox outbreak, and Vietnam's health ministry has issued guidance for preventing and treating the disease. As of July 30 WHO said there had been over 21,000 monkeypox cases in 78 countries and territories, including seven deaths. Typical monkeypox symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, skin lesions, and rashes. It is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids and lesion material. Vietnam has not recorded any cases so far. Health officials have … [Read more...] about Vietnam turns focus to monkeypox drugs

Vietnam to monitor entrants from countries with monkeypox
Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, China and Japan are some of the countries where monkeypox has been detected. Per the latest decision, foreign entrants from countries with monkeypox will have their body temperatures checked and be subject to other monitoring measures. Those suspected to be infected with the condition will be isolated and have their biological samples taken for testing. The ministry is yet to issue specific instructions on how foreign entrants from countries with monkeypox should be monitored, or when exactly these measures are to be applied. Vietnam has not recorded any monkeypox cases so far. Last week, Ho Chi Minh City proposed that foreign entrants are asked to complete medical declarations at the border as one of the anti-monkeypox measures. Nguyen Van Kinh, former director of the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said he believed health facilities are likely to be among the first places where monkeypox cases would be detected, instead of airports, … [Read more...] about Vietnam to monitor entrants from countries with monkeypox
