According to Pham Dang Khoa, deputy director of Vietinbank’s Card Centre, the biggest problem for banks when it comes to replacing magnetic strip cards is the cost. Banks have to pay for the new cards and invest in devices that accept them, such as ATMs and POS machines. Meanwhile, most customers are not willing to pay to switch. With more than eight million existing customers using magnetic strip cards, Khoa estimated his bank will have to spend a large sum as the cost of producing a chip card is roughly eight to ten times higher than magnetic strip cards. To encourage customers to use chip cards, Khoa said VietinBank would help customers replace their old cards due to the advantages of the new ones. Strong earthquake shakes southern Philippines
Hanoi (VNA) – A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Davao city on the Philippines’ Mindanao island on December 15, killing a 6-year-old girl and injuring 14 others, according to latest reports. The quake was centred 61 km south-west of Davao, at a depth of 28.2km, the US Geological Survey said, revising down the magnitude from an earlier 6.9. Roads and buildings, including the local government office, were damaged and power was out in the Magsaysay Town in Davao del Sur province, near the epicenter. No tsunami warning has been issued. The area was struck by four strong earthquakes in the past two months, causing the death of at least 20 people. The number increased by 4.2 percent from the previous month and posted a 0.9 percent year-on-year rise. According to the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific, Bamboo Airways and Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO) operated a total of 29,363 flights in the two-month period, up 22.8 percent from the same period last year. Of which, Jetstar Pacific had the highest rate of delayed or cancelled flights with 838, accounting for 25.5 percent of its scheduled routes. HCM City seeks US businesses’ support for infrastructure development
HCM CITY — HCM City seeks to attract foreign investment in smart urban projects and urban infrastructure, and looks forward to support from US businesses, a top city leader said. Speaking at a meeting between city leaders and members of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Việt Nam on Friday, Lê Thanh Liêm, deputy chairman of the city People’s Committee, said over the years US businesses had helped strengthen co-operation between their country and the city. The city was undertaking administrative reform and improving the investment environment to create favourable conditions for foreign businesses to invest in key projects, he said.
