Cultural resources are soft power in Hanoi’s creative city development strategy

The Hanoitimes - Once becoming a creative city, Hanoi will have to materialize its long-term programs and action plans on visions and political ties in the city. Cultural resources have become soft power in the development strategy of Hanoi as a creative city, helping to build political culture, business culture, and penetrating deeply into all other fields of the capital city. Ngo Thi Thanh Hang, member of the Party Central Committee and Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party's Committee made the statement at the seminar titled "Cultural resources in the development strategy of Hanoi creative city" on September 28. Photo: Hoa An Ms. Hang said that Hanoi, which has a long history of a millenary culture, has been honored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a "City for Peace" and "Creative City". In the city's development process, the municipal government and people of Hanoi always attach great importance to culture regarding it as the spiritual foundation of society, endogenous strength and the great motivation to develop the capital city, Ms. Hang added. She stressed that building a beautiful and impressive city image with friendly and elegant people in the eyes of international friends will contribute to enhancing Hanoi’s prestige and position in the country and on the international arena. Mr. Michael Croft, UNESCO Representative to Vietnam, noted that joining the Creative Cities Network is a start in the process of positioning Hanoi's development as a Creative Capital. In the years to come, Vietnam can establish a network of UNESCO Creative Cities nationwide. Vietnam, foreign experts to discuss how to build Hanoi into UNESCO Creative City

The Hanoitimes - The gathering is expected to contribute to presenting the new direction for the development of Hanoi. The People's Committee of Hanoi and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will hold the high-level seminar titled "Consultation on initiative: Hanoi - Creative City" on October 2 to discuss how to turn Vietnam's capital city into a creative one, the Government Portal reported. It is aimed to realize Hanoi's commitments as a member of the "UNESCO Network of Creative Cities". Furthermore, the event is expected to contribute to presenting the new direction for Hanoi's development, the potentials and opportunities for cooperation in the field of creative design, attracting attention and connecting with international investors and companies. The seminar is also an opportunity for Hanoi’s leaders, local and international experts, investors to exchange innovative ideas to support Hanoi in building long-term strategies and plans to promote the city’s role as a UNESCO creative city and attract the support of the local and international community. Additionally-registered FDI capital rises 2.5-fold

FDI going into capital expansion more than doubled against the year prior According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment's Foreign Investment Agency, as of February 20, total newly-registered and added capital, as well as investment into capital contribution and share purchases amounted to $5.46 billion, equivalent to 84.4 per cent of the same period last year. Of this, there were 126 newly-registered projects (down 74.8 per cent on-year) with a total investment of $3.31 billion, down 33.9 per cent on-year. The outstanding new project in these two months are the $1.3 billion O Mon II thermal power plant in Can Tho city, developed by a joint venture between Vietnam Trading Engineering Construction JSC (Vietracimex) and Marubeni Corporation from Japan, which received its investment certificate at the end of January. 115 projects (down 23.8 per cent on-year) expanded capital with a total value of $1.61 billion, 2.5 times as much as last year, largely driven by the LG Display Haiphong project which increased capital by $750 million. There were 445 instances of capital contributions and share purchases (down 71.9 per cent on-year) with a total investment of $543.1 million (down 34.4 per cent). The disbursement of foreign capital reached $2.5 billion in the first two months, rising 2 per cent on-year. The export turnover of foreign-invested enterprises also increased impressively. These actors exported $38.07 billion (including crude oil) worth of goods and services, a 34 per cent increase on-year and making up 76.1 per cent of the country's export turnover. Excluding crude oil, this export turnover was $37.9 billion, up 35.1 per cent, capturing 75.7 per cent of the country's total export turnover. Meanwhile, their import turnover was $31.6 billion, rising 31.2 per cent on-year. Thus, in the first two months, the trade surplus of foreign-invested enterprises was $6.5 billion (including crude oil) or nearly $6.3 billion (excluding crude oil). This …
