Trains resume service 51 hours after deadly India crash
Passenger and freight trains were running again on Monday at the site of India's deadliest train disaster in decades, which officials said was caused by failures linked to signal systems. Workers inspect the newly restored tracks at the accident site of a recent three-train collision near Balasore, about 200 km (125 miles) from the state capital Bhubaneswar in the eastern state of Odisha, on June 5, 2023. Trains rumbled past the debris of smashed carriages from Friday night's crash near Balasore in the eastern state of Odisha, where at least 275 people were killed and hundreds injured. Officials had initially reported 288 deaths, but the Odisha state government has since revised the toll to 275 after some bodies were mistakenly counted twice. Of the 1,175 injured, 382 were still being treated in hospital, authorities said on Sunday. However, many fear the death toll could still rise with medical centres overwhelmed by the number of casualties, many in … [Read more...] about Trains resume service 51 hours after deadly India crash
Viet Nam does not face challenge from Cambodia pepper exports to China: experts
About 90-95 per cent of Cambodia's pepper output has been exported to Viet Nam. — Photo nld.com.vn Viet Nam's pepper exports are not challenged by Cambodia being issued a licence to export its pepper to China directly, according to experts. The Viet Nam Trade Office in Cambodia quoted Khmer Times sources saying that Cambodian pepper would be available in China directly after the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) approved Cambodia’s export proposal. Accordingly, the GACC approved seven packaging factories and 28 growing facilities for pepper exports in Cambodia. Le Viet Anh, head of the Viet Nam Pepper Association's office, Cambodia exporting pepper directly to China was not a challenge for Viet Nam's pepper exports immediately because the pepper volume exported from Cambodia to China was not much. “About 90-95 per cent of Cambodia's pepper output have been exported to Viet Nam, then processors in Viet Nam have re-exported the volume to other countries, … [Read more...] about Viet Nam does not face challenge from Cambodia pepper exports to China: experts
Global airlines more than double 2023 profit outlook
"The pandemic years are behind us and borders are open as normal," Willie Walsh, head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), told IATA's annual summit of some 300 carriers. IATA boosted its industry profit forecast to $9.8 billion from $4.7 billion cheered by strong travel demand and an easing in oil prices. Revenue is expected to grow by 9.7% to $803 billion, inching closer to 2019's pre-pandemic level of $838 billion. But slender profit margins of 1.2% mean repairing damaged balance sheets and offering sustainable returns on investments will continue to be a headache for some airlines, Walsh said. He said airlines on average make $2.25 per passenger, "which is less than the price of a cup of coffee, a subway ticket". The profit forecast, raised from one given in December, reflected a boost in Europe, despite a wave of strikes. Airlines have in recent months reported strong results as they prepare for a busy summer season, with travel demand … [Read more...] about Global airlines more than double 2023 profit outlook
My husband won’t do housework because men’s work is harder
We got married due to an unplanned pregnancy. Even though we were already dating for two years, it was a long-distance relationship filled with fights and breakups, and yet we stayed together. After getting married, I didn’t have a stable job, and my husband didn’t get a job until our baby was 18 months old. He would watch over the kids for me but refused to do any household chores. He has a habit of reading comic books and playing video games that he just can’t get rid of. He rarely helps me with chores because he says, "I do men’s work and it's harder." He doesn’t talk to me or his children much, and once he’s home he’s already lying down somewhere to read comics or play games, even after finishing his dinner, he just goes back to whatever he was doing without bothering to help me or the kids with chores and homework. The only thing he does is hang the laundry and drive the kids to school. I have often brought up the problem of sharing household chores with him, but he … [Read more...] about My husband won’t do housework because men’s work is harder

Red River – a centerpiece in Hanoi’s green development
The vision is for Hanoi to become a vibrant, green, and serene metropolis with the Red River landscape axis. "For a long time, people often say that Hanoi has turned its back on the Red River," Nguyen Van Loc, a 60-year-old resident of Phuc Tan Ward, Hoan Kiem District, told The Hanoi Times as he gazed out at the vast expanse of lush green land ahead, with thriving banana plantations growing on the fertile alluvial plains known as the Red River Alluvial Island (or Bai giua song Hong in Vietnamese). The Middle Island of the Red River. Photo: Chien Cong/The Hanoi Times Spanning around 18 hectares and stretching 3.8 kilometers in length, the area is under the jurisdiction of Chuong Duong and Phuc Tan wards, Hoan Kiem District. Expressway linking HCMC, Mekong Delta to become doubly wide
Officials from the Ministry of Transport's Project Management Board No. 7 said at a meeting with authorities in the Mekong Delta province of Long An Monday that work to expand the 62-km expressway would begin in 2025 and be completed in two years, allowing vehicles to travel at speeds of 120 kph. Connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang Province and passing through Long An, the expressway opened to traffic in 2011 with four lanes and two emergency lanes. The only expressway between HCMC and the delta has become increasingly overloaded, especially during holidays such as Lunar New Year when people flock to their hometowns. Currently the maximum speed allowed for vehicles is 100 kph. Since toll collection was stopped in January 2019 it has seen the number of vehicles increase by 30% to 50,000 daily, resulting in frequent traffic snarls and accidents, according to the Directorate of Roads, which manages it. Last April the highway was lengthened by 50 km when the Trung Luong … [Read more...] about Expressway linking HCMC, Mekong Delta to become doubly wide
Sketches of master painter Nguyen Gia Tri on show in HCMC
Art collector Truong Van Thuan is hosting the exhibition in HCMC in remembrance of the 30th death anniversary of the painter. According to Thuan, before applying lacquer finishes to his paintings, Tri had to make many sketches in order to calculate the details, including ideas, graphics, colors, and compositions. “I want to show viewers how detailed and careful the painter [Nguyen Gia Tri] was with these sketches,” Thuan said. The most outstanding work, which is also the largest in size, is a sketch of part of one of Tri’s complete paintings. The majority of the works displayed are portraits, landscapes paintings, and abstract paintings. Some move beyond sketches and could be considered almost complete paintings, including this painting, “Kieu,” which portrays a woman holding a four-chord lute. This painting, which portrays landscapes in a rural area, is almost … [Read more...] about Sketches of master painter Nguyen Gia Tri on show in HCMC
