Jesus launched himself into the air to connect decisively in the third minute but City never hit top gear and they rather laboured to victory in an instantly forgettable match. Nevertheless, after bagging the League Cup, being locked in a titanic battle with Liverpool for the Premier League title and in the Champions League quarter-finals, Pep Guardiola’s side remain on course for an unprecedented clean sweep. It was a tired-looking display against Premier League relegation battlers Brighton, though, and City will need to rediscover their spark ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League last-eight tie. Guardiola was quick to play down the “Q” word. “My opinion is that nobody has done it (won the quadruple) so why can we do it?,” Guardiola said. “It is almost impossible to achieve everything, that is the truth. Our fans will come, more than today, for the final, we are losing players every game but … [Read more...] about Quadruple still on as Jesus heads City into FA Cup final

Wolves and Palace ease into FA Cup quarter-finalsThe Saigon Times Daily Wolverhampton Wanderers' Ivan Cavaleiro celebrates scoring their first goal at Ashton Gate Stadium, Bristol, Britain February 17, 2019 – PHOTO: REUTERS LONDON (REUTERS) - Wolverhampton Wanderers’ impressive season continued as they moved into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with Ivan Cavaleiro’s first-half goal sealing a 1-0 victory at Championship (second-tier) club Bristol City on Sunday. Portuguese Cavaleiro slotted home clinically in the 28th minute after great work by Matt Doherty and it was enough for Wolves to reach the last eight for the first time since 2003. After a mass exodus of Premier League clubs in the previous two rounds, Wolves continued a good weekend for the big boys which saw Manchester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Watford and Crystal Palace all send lower-league opposition packing. Palace were far too good on Sunday for third-tier Doncaster Rovers, with … [Read more...] about Wolves and Palace ease into FA Cup quarter-finals

Viet Nam News by Paul Kennedy May 14 1988 started out as a really good day. The sun was shining, I was 15-years-old and on my way to Wembley Stadium to watch Liverpool win the FA Cup. The result was a no brainer. Liverpool, the crème de la crème of English football versus Wimbledon. The Crazy Gang. Liverpool was a team packed with talent. Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton and Hansen. Wimbledon was a team packed with thugs, Vinnie Jones, Andy Thorn, Dennis Wise and some other players no one had ever heard of. Liverpool would win. They had to win, they were the better team. They could not possible lose. They lost. By one goal to nil. My dream day turned into a nightmare. The train journey back north was solemn to say the least. But you know what? Thirty plus years later, this final will still be remembered as one of the greatest in FA Cup history. Not because of the game itself, that was awful, but because it reminded the world of the beauty of the FA Cup. Fast forward to … [Read more...] about Klopp flops in the FA Cup but does it really matter?
Chelsea booked an FA Cup final showdown with Manchester United as Olivier Giroud tormented Southampton again with a sublime strike in Sunday's (Apr 22) 2-0 win at Wembley. Chelsea's Spanish striker Alvaro Morata (centre) celebrates scoring his team's second goal against Southampton during the English FA Cup semi-final football match. (Glyn KIRK/AFP) Giroud has made a habit of scoring against Southampton and the France forward was their nemesis in a one-sided semi-final. Opting to select Giroud instead of Alvaro Morata proved a shrewd move by Chelsea manager Antonio Conte as the former Arsenal star produced a tremendous piece of skill to break the deadlock early in the second half. Giroud has feasted on Southampton this season, scoring twice to spark Chelsea's 3-2 win last weekend and also netting a late equaliser against them for Arsenal in December. His fourth goal for Chelsea since his January signing was followed by a late header from substitute Morata, setting up a … [Read more...] about Chelsea face Man Utd in FA Cup final as Giroud sinks Saints
