Job cuts continue for the leather and footwear industry
Due to a decline in orders, PouYuen Vietnam, a shoe manufacturer whose clients include Nike and Adidas, has announced it will eliminate nearly 6,000 permanent positions between late May and early June. This will be the largest series of terminations since the corporation began operations in Ho Chi Minh City in 1996. With an estimated 50,000 employees, the company is one of the commercial capital's largest employers. However, it made a similar move in February, laying off nearly 3,000 permanent employees and not renewing the contracts of another 3,000 temporary workers. Pham Hong Viet, president of the Hanoi Leather and Footwear Association, said, "The export market has experienced a grave decline in orders." The size of the drop-off in orders ranges from 50 to 70 per cent, with some domestic companies suspending production entirely, with currently no orders for export. NA deputies call for extended VAT cuts

NA deputies are calling for extended VAT cuts to further stimulate domestic consumption. — VNA/VNS Photo Tran Viet National Assembly deputies are pushing hard for extended VAT cuts applicable to all firms across the board, but the Minister of Finance Ho Duc Phocstands firm against the call. NA deputy Tran Chi Cuong from Da Nang City said the VAT cuts initiated in May would come into force from July 1 to December 31, which is too short a period of time to produce their desired effect. He called for the time frame to be extended to 2024 to give the economy more time to absorb the fiscal stimulus. Cerebral palsy children in need of help after losing father
A mother in Nam Dinh Province is in calling for support to treat her two children who both have cerebral palsy. Tran Thuy Loan and her daughter Tran Thuy Loan's son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at only 7-months-old. For three years, she brought her son to various hospitals for treatment. Unfortunately, when her son's condition showed signs of improvement, her husband had brain cancer in 2014 and died in late 2020, leaving behind three children and a VND300m (USD13,000) debt. Loan's youngest daughter, Tran Tuong Vy, was born prematurely and also suffers from cerebral palsy. "Who wouldn't want their children to be healthy and pursue studying? After my husband died, one of my children, who was only 7 years old, kept asking me to let him drop out of school to work to save his siblings," Loan said.
