Fears for orangutans, dolphins as Indonesia presses on with new capital
Just outside Indonesia's planned new capital on Borneo island, an orangutan catches a banana with one hand, thrown by a conservationist on a boat, while her other hand clings to a tree branch. She is one of 127 orangutans that the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) is caring for in the Samboja district, East Kalimantan. They have lost their homes due to deforestation, often linked to coal mining, and palm oil and timber plantations. But the giant apes could face an even bigger threat as Southeast Asia's largest country builds from scratch Nusantara - a new $32 billion city. A male Orangutan called 'Boni' is seen at the Arsari Orangutan Sanctuary Center located near Indonesia's projected new capital called Nusantara, in Sepaku, East Kalimantan province, Indonesia, March 7, 2023. North Korea says it has tested new nuclear-capable underwater attack drone
During the drill, the new North Korean drone cruised underwater at a depth of 80 to 150 meters (260-500 feet)for over 59 hours and detonated in waters off its east coast on Thursday, North Korean state news agency KCNA said. Dubbed "Haeil", or tsunami, the drone system is intended to make sneak attacks in enemy waters and destroy naval striker groups and major operational ports by making a super-scale radioactive wave through an underwater explosion, the KCNA said. "This nuclear underwater attack drone can be deployed at any coast and port or towed by a surface ship for operation," the news agency said, adding the test had been overseen by leader Kim Jong Un. It is unclear whether North Korea has fully developed miniaturized nuclear warheads needed to fit on its smaller weapons. Analysts say perfecting smaller warheads would most likely be a key goal if the North resumes nuclear testing. Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul, said Pyongyang's latest claim … [Read more...] about North Korea says it has tested new nuclear-capable underwater attack drone
US lawmakers make new push to bar convicted violent passengers from flights
Three lawmakers said on Monday they plan to reintroduce the "Protection from Abusive Passengers Act," saying the enhanced penalty is a strong deterrent and needed to improve aviation worker and passenger safety and "minimize disruptions to the national aviation system and restore confidence in air travel." Senator Jack Reed and Representative Eric Swalwell, both Democrats, and Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick are introducing the bill after a series of incidents aboard airplanes. Last year, the American Civil Liberties Union opposed creating a no-fly list for unruly passengers, saying the U.S. government "has a terrible record of treating people fairly with regard to the existing no-fly list and other watch lists that are aimed at alleged terrorists." During the early stages of the pandemic, much of the passenger anger was sparked by the federal government mask mandate. Despite the end of the airplane mask mandate in April 2022, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) … [Read more...] about US lawmakers make new push to bar convicted violent passengers from flights
