S.Korea relaxes visa requirements for Vietnam visitors Dao Loan By Dao Loan - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC - The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) and the South Korean Consulate General in HCMC have introduced a number of new policies aimed at relaxing visa requirements for Vietnamese visitors, especially groups of travelers. These new policies are designed to attract more MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition) travelers, who are among the target groups of South Korea. The authorities of South Korea have decided to loosen visa requirements for a group of at least five Vietnamese travelers whose visits are financed by businesses in the list of 500 top companies in Vietnam posted on the website www.vnr500.com.vn, the firms with revenues surpassing US$5 million a year or groups of students from high schools or lower levels. Vietnam has seen a 17.3% increase in the number of foreign arrivals between January and July compared to the same period last year, according to the country's National Administration of Tourism. The growth was vivid in air travel, which made up 84% of all modes of entry into the country. A great percentage of these air travelers came with a visa on arrival. A visa-on-arrival is the legal travel document to enter a country obtained at the airport or border gate. Vietnam is considered as one of the countries in the world that have adopted visa-on-arrival policy effectively, according to statistic figures. India, for example, boasted some 800 visas on arrival issued this July while some other countries have suspended the program. Though official statistics has yet to reveal the exact number of approval letter issued to international tourists visiting Vietnam, an estimate based on nationality analyses can give a surprising number. I returned to Vietnam yesterday (March 19) and utilized again the visa-on-arrival (V-O-A) service. The situation at the V-O-A counter at Tan Son Nhat International Airport was quite chaotic and disorganized, as it has been from the initiation of the program. This wasn't too much of a concern a year ago as the service was not heavily utilized. Now there are many, many visitors expecting to get their visa on arrival.
