Vietnam government bonds rise on central bank’s rate-cut plan
Vietnam's three-year bonds rose after the central bank said it would cut interest rates due to slowing inflation. The dong was steady. The State Bank of Vietnam will reduce its refinancing and repurchase rates by 1 percentage point in the "next few days," Governor Nguyen Van Binh said Tuesday in Hanoi, following a request from Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. The central bank will also lower the maximum interest rate banks can pay for deposits in dong, he said. Cars stolen in US handed over to Vietnam government
Vietnamese customs authorities have handed over to the government four luxury cars suspected of being stolen in the US and smuggled into Vietnam after the apparent consignee refused to take delivery, VnExpress has reported. The cars -- two BMWs, a Mercedes-Benz, and a Volkswagen - were seized at Hai Phong Port March 9 after they arrived in containers of aluminum coils, leaves, and dock levelers. Thuy Anh Minh Company, based in Hanoi, was listed as the consignee, but it refused to take delivery after finding out the containers' contents. In April the US media reported that 16 luxury cars being shipped to Asia were seized at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports after authorities discovered that a stolen Ferrari worth at least $240,000 was among them. The Government Office has sought clarification from the Ministry of Public Security on a deputy health minister’s report on a gang producing methamphetamine from a medical substance in Vietnam, Tuoi Tre reported Friday. Last month Cao Minh Quang sent a report to Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc seeking a crackdown on a gang which allegedly manufactured the synthetic drug from Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (PSE), a substance used to produce common flu and allergy remedies. Meanwhile, government inspectors and officials from Ministry of Health agencies Thursday met to discuss the management, import, and use of PSE, the newspaper said. Last year the ministry banned the import of PSE after finding a dramatic increase in imports by a number of drug companies between 2010 and 2011.
