Vietnam-China border trade slumps on Covid restrictions
Vietnamese firms shipped just US$509-million worth of goods to China through the border, a 87 percent dive year-on-year, according to customs data. Imports from China dropped by 52.5 percent to $3.64 billion. China’s zero-Covid strategy and tightened control of cross-border movement have had the biggest effect on trade, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said. Lack of transport, logistic and cross-border trade infrastructure worsened the situation, it added. Though trading through key border gates in the northern provinces of Lao Cai and Lang Son has resumed, customs clearance has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. At Lang Son’s Tan Thanh Border Gate, Vietnam’s main point for fruit export to China, only 100 vehicles get customs clearance a day, a third of the pre-pandemic level. The ministry has warned that the border congestion could escalate if no measures are taken. China was Vietnam’s largest partner last year, with bilateral trade reaching $166 billion. Bright outlook predicted for rice exports
Vietnam exports nearly 2.77 million tonnes of milled rice in the first five months of 2022. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – As many countries in the world have limited food exports to guarantee domestic food security , rice – a staple in most of Asia – is forecast to witness surging prices in the time ahead, which is said to be a chance for Vietnam – one of the world’s largest rice exporters. Vu Thi Hue, head of the export - import division of the Dai Duong Xanh Export - Import Co. Ltd, said while lower wheat output and higher production costs have forced many countries to seek alternatives, rice is a suitable choice with good prices. So a bright prospect could be seen for both export volume and prices in the time ahead. In the first five months of 2022, nearly 2.77 million tonnes of milled rice worth over 1.35 billion USD were shipped abroad, rising 6.6% in volume but declining 4% in value year on year, according to preliminary data from the General Department of Vietnam … [Read more...] about Bright outlook predicted for rice exports

Thai food exports expected to grow well
A shop selling rice in Bangkok, Thailand. (Photo: AFP/VNA) Bangkok (VNA) - The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has projected that Thai food exporters are likely to benefit from a global food shortage expected to intensify during the third and fourth quarters this year. According to Kriengkrai Thiennukul , chairman of the FTI, many countries might experience food shortages because such nations as India, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo and Egypt have restricted their exports, including wheat. A shortage of fertiliser and animal feed amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war resulted in lower crop yields, making stockpiling of food appear to be unavoidable. The FTI believed that the Thai food industry will benefit from this situation as purchase orders increase amid growing worries over the shortages. Thai food factories have prepared raw materials for food processing in order to meet increasing demand in the global food market, the chairman said. The federation said it is … [Read more...] about Thai food exports expected to grow well
