Vietnam-China border trade slumps on Covid restrictions

July 4, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

Vietnamese firms shipped just US$509-million worth of goods to China through the border, a 87 percent dive year-on-year, according to customs data. Imports from China dropped by 52.5 percent to $3.64 billion. China’s zero-Covid strategy and tightened control of cross-border movement have had the biggest effect on trade, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said. Lack of transport, logistic and cross-border trade infrastructure worsened the situation, it added. Though trading through key border gates in the northern provinces of Lao Cai and Lang Son has resumed, customs clearance has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. At Lang Son’s Tan Thanh Border Gate, Vietnam’s main point for fruit export to China, only 100 vehicles get customs clearance a day, a third of the pre-pandemic level. The ministry has warned that the border congestion could escalate if no measures are taken. China was Vietnam’s largest partner last year, with bilateral trade reaching $166 billion. June 25, 2022 by en.vietnamplus.vn

Processing Tra fish (Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNA) – Seafood shipments overseas have risen in the first half of 2022, and experts say Tra fish exports can increase the market share in the EU, while that of shrimp has a lot of room for growth in Canada. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), as of May, the value of frozen Tra fish exports to the EU this year reached 76.8 million USD, up 95% year-on-year. This means the market has bounced back after a two-year downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Netherlands remains the biggest market in the EU for the Vietnamese products, while positive signals are coming from the shipment of frozen Tra fish to Germany, Spain, and Belgium. In addition to the bloc, Vietnamese Tra fish exporters have also stepped up their activities in Mexico, Egypt and Thailand. As of mid-May, Vietnam exports shipped to Mexico are at 45.6 million USD, up 70% year-on-year. Bright outlook predicted for rice exports

July 2, 2022 by en.vietnamplus.vn

Vietnam exports nearly 2.77 million tonnes of milled rice in the first five months of 2022. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – As many countries in the world have limited food exports to guarantee domestic food security , rice – a staple in most of Asia – is forecast to witness surging prices in the time ahead, which is said to be a chance for Vietnam – one of the world’s largest rice exporters. Vu Thi Hue, head of the export - import division of the Dai Duong Xanh Export - Import Co. Ltd, said while lower wheat output and higher production costs have forced many countries to seek alternatives, rice is a suitable choice with good prices. So a bright prospect could be seen for both export volume and prices in the time ahead. In the first five months of 2022, nearly 2.77 million tonnes of milled rice worth over 1.35 billion USD were shipped abroad, rising 6.6% in volume but declining 4% in value year on year, according to preliminary data from the General Department of Vietnam … [Read more...] about Bright outlook predicted for rice exports

Aquatic exports spike 40 percent in H1

July 4, 2022 by www.sggpnews.org.vn

Frozen shrimp production at a factory in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang. (Photo: SGGP) The country earned more than $3.2 billion from aquatic exports in the second quarter of 2022, an increase of 36 percent from the same period last year. According to VASEP, shipments of shrimp picked up 7 percent – a quite modest pace – to total $450 million as a result of input shortages. Though, the sector experienced a strong growth of 33 percent in H1 to bring home $2.3 billion, accounting for 40 percent of the total seafood exports. Several producers have raised the shipments of high value-added processed shrimp products, instead of raw ones, to major markets like Japan, the US and the EU as a way to address input shortages. Exports of lobster posted a record-high 30-fold surge year-on-year to $130 million. High inflation coupled with the Russia-Ukraine crisis have brought big opportunity for Tra fish from Vietnam this year. Sanctions on imports of Russian-caught whitefish in … [Read more...] about Aquatic exports spike 40 percent in H1

Wood products to be exported to the EU. — VNA/VNS Photo HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam is set to grant a licence under the Voluntary Partnership Agreement/FAO-EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Programme to wood exports in 2025, after it completes preparing necessary conditions, reported a Government official familiar with the sector. Bùi Chính Nghĩa, deputy general director of the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, reported the new developments at a June 17 workshop held by the administration, the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association, and the Association of Handicraft and Wood Industry of HCM City (HAWA). He pointed out that despite an annual double-digit growth rate, the country’s wood industry is still facing numerous challenges in 2022. Apart from the pandemic, escalating political tensions have caused more challenges to supply chains, soaring logistics costs and material prices have resulted in higher input costs. Inflation in key export markets … [Read more...] about Việt Nam to grant FLEGT licence to wood exports in 2025

Thai food exports expected to grow well

June 21, 2022 by en.vietnamplus.vn

A shop selling rice in Bangkok, Thailand. (Photo: AFP/VNA) Bangkok (VNA) -  The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has projected that Thai food exporters are likely to benefit from a global food shortage expected to intensify during the third and fourth quarters this year. According to Kriengkrai Thiennukul , chairman of the FTI, many countries might experience food shortages because such nations as India, Serbia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo and Egypt have restricted their exports, including wheat. A shortage of fertiliser and animal feed amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war resulted in lower crop yields, making stockpiling of food appear to be unavoidable. The FTI believed that the Thai food industry will benefit from this situation as purchase orders increase amid growing worries over the shortages. Thai food factories have prepared raw materials for food processing in order to meet increasing demand in the global food market, the chairman said. The federation said it is … [Read more...] about Thai food exports expected to grow well
