VN coffee sector to expand intensive processing to add value
Vietnam has set itself a target of increasing the ratio of processed coffee from the current 10 per cent to 30-40 per cent by 2030 to add value, the Viet Nam Coffee Week heard in HCM City on Wednesday. Speaking at the conference, Dr Nguyen Do Anh Tuan, director general of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s international cooperation department, said Viet Nam is the world’s second largest coffee exporter and tops in robusta production and export, with about 1.5 million tonnes of coffee exported each year, fetching a revenue of US$3.5 billion. But the exports remain in the form of unprocessed beans with little value addition, he said. Minister Dung was speaking at the anniversary to mark the International Day for Persons with Disability December 3. Việt Nam has around 6.2 million people over the age of two with disabilities, making up 7.06 per cent of the country’s population. Of those, 28 per cent are severely disabled, 58 per cent female, 28 per cent children and 10 per cent living in poverty. Most live in rural areas and many are victims of Agent Orange. E-government for 4.0 closer to reality (illustration photo) A few weeks ago Mai Tien Dung, Minister, Chairman of the Government Office, and Japanese Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Masatoshi Ishida inked an MoU on developing e-government in Vietnam. Under the deal, both sides will share experience in compiling legal frameworks and policies for the scheme. Moreover, Japan will help train Vietnamese experts and managers of IT services in operating an information system for an e-government. Both nations will also organise conferences on e-government and training workshops. The Japanese side is also considering a non-refundable assistance sum for a technical package for e-government construction in Vietnam. E-government is considered an effective mechanism for increasing government productivity and efficiency, and is a key enabler of citizen-centric services.
