The Hanoitimes - Ethnic minorities are increasingly choosing not to wear their traditional costumes, especially for their daily activities. The Muong Lo region, currently located in Nghia Lo Town of northern Yen Bai Province, is considered the hometown of Thais across Vietnam. Yet, it is uncommon to see a woman wearing the full garb of a traditional Thai costume - a long skirt and a tight blouse. Most modern Thai women pair the traditional long skirt with either a T-shirt or shirts resembling those worn by the majority Kinh group. Thai men are typically outfitted in clothes worn by the Kinh group. Among the Mong people, images of Mong men wearing T-shirts and shirts are becoming increasingly popular. Mong women are no longer wearing skirts they have woven and embroidered by themselves. Instead, they sport ready-to-wear skirts that can be easily bought at local markets. (Cinet)- The Minister, Chairman of Committee for Giang Seo Phu ethnic minority has promulgated Decision 204/QĐ-UBDT approving “Projection for the first performance of traditional costumes of Vietnamese ethnic groups”. The performance of traditional cosmetics of 54 ethnic minorities nationwide is scheduled to take place in Hanoi In November 2011. The criteria for selecting the participants are: being Vietnamese citizens at the age group of 18-40 with balanced figure; having 1.65m height onwards for man and 1.55m onwards for woman; and being the representative of ethnic groups in the community of 54 Vietnamese nations. A special presentation of traditional costumes of the 54 ethnic groups of Vietnam will be held in Hanoi in November this year. The event is being organized by the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The organizers expect to attract around 250 Vietnamese male and female participants between 18 and 40 years of age, of minimum height 1.65m for male candidates and 1.55m for female candidates from cities and provinces across the country. Participants will represent their ethnic group with their traditional costumes which will be accessorized with traditional necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The presentation will display their daily activities and also special ceremonies like weddings and folk festivals. The participants will demonstrate various performing skills and display all their inherent deep rooted culture. The “traditional costumes fashion show of Vietnam’s northern ethnic groups” will be held at 5pm on October 5 at the Korean Cultural Centre, 49 Nguyen Du, Hanoi. Viewers will have the chance to contemplate girls from the highlands spreading their umbrellas charming in brocade dresses and boys from the plains looking dapper in their turban and dress.
