Shrimp processing for export (Photo: VNA) Sydney (VNA) - Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the delay in customs clearance of Vietnamese goods exported to Australia, especially at the quarantine stage, has become serious, mainly in the two states of New South Wales and Victoria. One of the main reasons is that Australia is currently facing labour shortages in many fields, while trade is growing and the spread of COVID-19 is still complicated. According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Australia , right from the beginning of April, in its market bulletin, the office announced the situation and made recommendations on several measures to minimise impacts of the delay as proposed by Australia. Vietnamese exports to Nordic markets thrive
General Department of Vietnam Customs’ data showed that the bilateral trade reached US$1.03 billion in the first four months of 2022 (up 15 percent from the same period of 2021), including US$689.13 million worth of Vietnamese exports (up 19.2 percent) and US$342.16 million worth of Vietnamese imports (up 7.3 percent). Vietnam court sentences 7 to death for narcotic transportation
The People’s Court in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap on Wednesday sentenced seven people to death for illegally transporting over 45 kilograms of narcotics in 2020. The death penalty was handed down to Le Duy Linh, Tran Van Thuc, Nguyen Minh Thiet, Huynh Van Ly, Le Van Thanh, Nguyen Van Thai, and Nguyen Trung Hieu. All were convicted of the illegal transportation of narcotics, though Linh was also found guilty of trading, possession of narcotics, and organization of illegal drug use. An eighth and ninth individual also present at the trial received a life sentence and 20-year sentence, respectively, for drug-related offenses. Vietnam enjoys trade surplus following double-digit export growth
Imports rose by 13.6 percent to $215.59 billion, according to data from the General Statistic Office. In the same period last year Vietnam had run up a trade deficit of $3.31 billion. Mobile phones and components remained the top export item, with their value going up 13.1 percent to $33.7 billion. Electronics, laptops and components were second at $31.7 billion, followed by equipment and spare parts at $24.9 billion. Garment and footwear exports jumped by nearly 20 percent each to $22.1 billion and $14.1 billion. The U.S. continued to be Vietnam’s biggest export market with its purchases going up by 24.3 percent to $67.1 billion. China followed with imports of $30.4 billion. Germany stops issuing visas for Vietnam’s new passport
The website of the German Embassy in Hanoi posted information on July 27, noting that the German representative office “cannot issue a visa for an ordinary Vietnamese passport, the new navy blue form, with a serial number starting with the letter P.” “If you have such a passport you cannot apply for a visa. This is based on the decision of the German domestic authorities,” the note continued. “For those who have already applied for a visa, the Embassy will send a separate notice.” The information immediately caused concern for many Vietnamese people who were planning to travel to Germany or soon plan to visit relatives. Vietnam court sentences 4 to death for transporting 34kg of narcotics from Cambodia
The People’s Court of An Giang Province in southern Vietnam on Thursday sentenced four people to death and one to life in prision for trafficking 34kg of drugs from Cambodia. The death penalty was handed down to Nguyen Thi Bich Diem, Mai Vinh Hau, Huynh Van Tung, and Le Dang Huy. All four were convicted of the illegal transportation, trading, and possession of narcotics. The fifth defendant, Nguyen Do Thanh, received a life sentence in prison for the same offense. The indictment showed that on June 14, 2020, at around 2:30 pm, police in An Giang Province stopped six individuals traveling on two motorbikes who they believed might have entered Vietnam illegally. Three members of the group obeyed officers’ commands, but the others did not and instead led officers on a chase.
