Affluent travelers who reserve whole resorts, fly to Vietnam on special aircraft, use a private chef, or go to Vietnam on a weekend just to play golf are sought after by travel firms. News about the 7-day-long wedding of an Indian couple organized at the 5-star resort JW Marriott on Phu Quoc Island appeared in local newspapers for many days. The couple reserved the entire resort, and brought 700 guests, dozens of tons of goods and costumes from India.  Prior to that, a Singaporean couple reserved a luxury resort in Da Nang for four days where their wedding ceremony took place. Other tourist sites have also been chosen for clients’ special events. The number of Japanese travelers to Da Nang soared by 18 times in 2011-2017 as non-stop flights between Vietnam and Japan have given a push to tourism industry development. Tourism, together with agriculture, labor and supporting industries, is listed as one of four new key business fields for cooperation between Vietnam and Japan. A report released in 2018 on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations showed that nearly 390,000 Vietnamese traveled to Japan in the year. Vietnam is Japan’s fastest growing market in South East Asia. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) reported that the number of Japanese travelers that Vietnam attracted is the second largest in Southeast Asia, just after Thailand.   Tam Bảo, a place where Buddha is worshipped. VNS Photos Thúy Tình HÀ NỘI — Trúc Lâm Cô Tô, the first Buddhist Pagoda in Cô Tô Island, was inaugurated yesterday to enrich the spiritual and cultural life of the islanders. The Buddhist Sangha of the northern province of Quảng Ninh in collaboration with the Cô Tô District People’s Committee started construction last year. The pagoda includes Tam Bảo, a 270sq.m place where Buddha can be worshipped and a pavilion to worship the Mother Goddesses. Vietnam’s competitiveness in the tourism sector has improved significantly, but many travellers are unhappy about the visa policy. The World Economic Forum (WEF) released a report on global tourism competitiveness, showing that Vietnam moved up from 67th out of 136 countries in 2017 to 63rd out of 140 countries in 2019. It was described as an encouraging result if noting that the majority of other regional countries didnot move up in ranking. Under the current regulation, the visa fee is $25 per person. However, according to Chinh, the survey found that only 18 percent of foreign travelers paid under $30, while the majority of foreign travelers had to pay over $30. In Q1 2019, TAB carried out a survey on foreign travelers, travel firms and NGOs that had applied for visas to Vietnam and found that foreign travelers and organizations wanted Vietnam to improve the visa policy.
