A new US-Vietnam Cooperation Centre was opened on Tuesday at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam's campus in Hanoi. The opening ceremony saw the attendance of US Ambassador Knapper, Assistant Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet, Acting President of Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam Pham Lan Dung, and Counselor for Public Affairs Pamnella DeVolder. Vietnam’s aviation industry needs to improve to keep up with the global market as flights resume following the pandemic, Deputy Minister of Transport Le Anh Tuan said on May 24. He made the remark at an international seminar titled “Vietnam aviation in a post-pandemic world” organised by Tap chi Cong San (Communist Review) and the Ministry of Transport. There were 42 million international visitors out of 116 million air passengers in Vietnam in 2019, before the pandemic broke out. About half of them came to Vietnam to invest and seek business opportunities. The volume of goods shipped by air reached 1.5 million tonnes in 2019, which was rather low compared to other modes of transport but accounted for 25 percent of the value of exported goods. Downpours kill three in northern Vietnam
Two people in Tuyen Quang were buried by landslides while the person in Hoa Binh was swept away by flash floods, the National Steering Committee on Natural Disaster Prevention and Control announced Tuesday, without elaborating. Landslide and flash floods have destroyed almost 260 houses in the northern highlands, including over 100 in Tuyen Quang, 50 in Yen Bai and 40 in Ha Giang. Floodwaters damaged 9,500 hectares of rice fields in several localities, with Hanoi suffering the most, losing more than 4,000 hectares, followed by Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho with 1,500 hectares each. Vietnam reports additional 1,323 Covid-19 infections on Tuesday
An additional 1,323 new Covid-19 infections were confirmed on Tuesday, raising the national tally to over 10.71 million, according to the Ministry of Health. According to the ministry's report, most of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 33 out of 63 localities in the country with some localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (321), Vinh Phuc (98), Phu Tho (94), Yen Bai (58), and Quang Ninh (52). As of Tuesday evening, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to over 10.71 million. The country now stands 12th among 227 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections. On May 24, an additional 6,495 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to over 9.41 million. Vietnam ramps up surveillance amid monkeypox outbreak in 12 countries
A representative of the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health was quoted on the government news portal as saying monkeypox was usually zoonotic, but human-to-human transmission was possible through contact with wounds, bodily fluids and contaminated objects. To detect possible cases of monkeypox and promptly roll out response plans, the health ministry has asked local health departments to detect possible cases at the border, especially among those coming from countries where monkeypox is present: Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone and South Sudan. Medical facilities should also increase surveillance and if possible cases of monkeypox are detected, they must be reported to health departments for follow up action. In Vietnam, little girl dies of snakebite as hospitals couldn’t find corresponding antivenom
A four-year-old Vietnamese girl has passed away after she was bitten by a venomous snake but no venom antiserum against the species was available for use to save her then, local authorities said. The little girl, S.T.N.N., died on Sunday, a week after being bitten by a Malayan krait snake, one of the venomous snake species, while sleeping at home in Phuoc Tan Commune, Son Hoa District, Phu Yen Province, located in the south-central region. N.'s mother found her daughter being bitten by the snake at 0:00 on May 16 and took the girl to the district health center immediately, the commune authorities said. Due to her critical condition, the girl was transferred to the Phu Yen Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital at 2:30 am the same day in a state of lethargy and difficulty breathing. Hanoi's Hoang Mai district recorded rainfall of over 130 mm from May 23 night, followed by Hai Ba Trung district at 100 mm, and Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da and Long Bien districts at 80 mm. Traffic jams have been seen in Ngo Xuan Quang, Co Linh, Ngoc Lam and Duc Giang roads in Long Bien, and many other streets in the capital city.
