NXP Semiconductors, a subsidiary of Philips Corp., has announced a plan to join Vietnam's mobile phone market. According to this plan, mobile phones with prices ranging from US $25 to US $30 will be available in Vietnam in the near future. Mr. Jack Van Mook, NXP Semiconductors'General Director for South East Asia, said that the company has joined with partners in Vietnam to handle the supply and distribution of its product to the Vietnamese market. NXP Semiconductor, one of the ten leading semiconductor companies in the world, will provide PNX4901 and PNX4904 chips that combine all features of a mobile phone into one. The company will also advise its partners on both hardware and software development, in order to bring cheap mobile phones to the market. Mobile phone market competition in Vietnam is set to heat up as producers have plans to offer fresh new phones that are both stylish and cheap. Many mobile phone giants from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong introduced new low cost phones with high-tech features at the recent Telecom 2006 in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam's mobile phone market is expected to grow rapidly in the near future although its cell phone penetration currently hit just four percent, announced a European market research group recently. Vietnam's cell phone subscribers, in a country of 81 million people, are expected to surge by 35% in the next 14 months, said a recent report entitled "Vietnam Mobile Subscriber and Consumer Preferences" issued by Research and Markets Ltd (R&M). Prices rise as computer equipment and mobile phones in short supply
Computer equipment and mobile phone prices are on the rise as sellers are suffering a product shortage. Truong Huy in District 3 of HCM City said he was looking for a 3G Nokia 2730 mobile phone. However, both The Gioi Di Dong and Vien Thong A, the two biggest mobile phone distributors could neither sell him the product or say when they might be available. Huy believes distributors refused to sell the mobile phones believing they would be able to sell them later at a higher price. Meanwhile, Mai Trinh, an executive of The Gioi Di Dong, denied this, saying the model Huy wanted is a new one that they did not import in large quantities. However, Huy has his reasons to doubt distributors do not want to sell mobile phones at this moment, because prices are still on the rise.
