Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam lost 0-5 to world defending champion Nikhat Zareen of India in the light flyweight final match of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi on Sunday evening, bringing home a silver medal. Before the match, Zareen was considered the great hope for the host to secure the championship title. She was the defending champion in the 52kg class before moving down to the 50kg weight category. The first round saw Zareen, who received great cheers from home spectators, launch many quality right-handed punches toward Tam. The host boxer received five 10-point markings from judges, while the visiting fighter got five 9-point markings, losing the round. Vietnam has dominated the past three Games with 17 golds in 2017, 16 in 2019 and 22 at the last Games held a year later than scheduled in 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With just six weeks to go before the start of the Games, the team is training hard to keep its top spot. “We have set a target for each group," said Nguyen Manh Hung, general secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation . Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam beat Botswana athlete Modukanele Lethabo Bokamoso in the Round of 16 of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in India on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals. With a height advantage, Tam showed a preemptive strategy. She scored an almost absolute point in each of the first two rounds of Tuesday’s showdown. In the third round, Lethabo Bokamoso appeared to be physically weaker and even kissed the canvas once. In the end, Tam won 5-0, including four rounds with absolute points of 30. Hungary to grant scholarships to 3 Vietnamese football talents
Three Vietnamese football talents aged 13-14 are expected to receive scholarships from Hungary so as to be trained in this Central European nation for multiple years to become professional players. These are among 200 scholarships that Hungary will offer for Vietnamese students to follow higher education involving sports at top universities in the European country, heard attendees at a recent meeting between Vietnam Sports Administration and a Hungarian Olympic Committee delegation. Szabo Bence, director of the House of Hungary at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, said the Hungarian Olympic Committee mapped out many programs to promote sports cooperation with Vietnam. Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam trounced Spanish rival Laura Fuertes Fernandez 5-0 in the women’s 50kg quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in India on Wednesday. From the beginning of Wednesday’s match, Tam showed her dominance over Fernandez. Tam did not allow her opponent to approach while launching single and continuous attacks. With abundant physical strength and good stature, Tam confused the European No. 9 and took the lead in the showdown. Vietnamese boxer enters world championship final
Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam made history as the first Vietnamese boxer to fight in a world final after winning 4-1 in the semifinals of the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in India on Thursday. Tam faced French opponent Lkhadiri Wassila, who has won the French championship seven times, as well as earned two bronze medals in Europe, in Thursday’s 50kg semifinal. Tam won the first round with a flurry of straight punches and hooks from both left and right. She lost the second round when Wassila adapted to her attacks. Tam kept her distance in the final round in order to avoid attacks from Wassila. She effectively threw three punches and three hooks from the right arm at the end of the round, convincing four of the five coaches to name her the winner. K'Duong wins gold medals at IWF World Youth Championships. (Photo: IWF) Hanoi (VNA) - K'Duong set up three world records at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships , which is ongoing in Durres, Albania. The Vietnamese broke all three of his own youth world records when he finished 24kg clear of his nearest rival in the men’s 55kg category on March 26. K'Duong, who celebrated his 16th birthday three weeks ago, was the only current world record holder among the men’s entries in Durres. He has made only 11 attempts in his international weightlifting career and he has already set six world records. In the snatch event, he missed his first attempt at 107kg because of a press-out, but successfully managed it the second time to secure the first gold. Tam earned the victory in the round of 16 in the 48-50 kilogram category, in which Nazym won the world championship in 2014 and 2016. Nazym was also crowned Asian champion in the 50-52 kilogram category in 2021 and finished third in Asia in the 48-50 kilogram category last year. But Tam managed to claim a perfect victory, taking advantage of her height and long arms to keep the opponent from coming close. All her punches and hooks were effective. After three rounds, the 29-year-old Vietnamese fighter was declared the winner, with four out of five judges giving her the maximum score of 30.
