Japanese prefer soups, so it is not surprising when pho becomes a popular dish among the Japanese community in Vietnam. Hiroe K. from Tokyo had lived in Hanoi for years before moving to Ho Chi Minh City. In Hanoi, she did not often eat out but she chose pho whenever she had a chance. Hiroe can eat pho once to twice per month. In Ho Chi Minh City, she even pays more attention to pho . “It is interesting as I can easily find a pho restaurant when stepping out of my house. My friends often recommend me [ pho with] flank steak, brisket, and beef tendon, but I find it hard to remember them so I usually order a special bowl of pho,' she said. “As its name suggests, the dish is special as you can enjoy many types of beef. [It’s] very delicious!” Hiroe found that the key difference between pho in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is that pho in the Vietnamese capital is not served with herbs. Meanwhile, pho restaurants in the southern metropolis provide … [Read more...] about ‘Pho’ becomes popular dish among Japanese in Vietnam

Couple killed in grizzly bear attack in Canada’s Banff National Park
TORONTO -- A grizzly bear attacked and killed two people and their dog in Alberta's Banff National Park, according to Canadian park officials and a friend of the victims. Parks Canada said in a statement on Saturday night it had received an alert late Friday from a GPS device indicating a bear attack in the Red Deer River Valley west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch in Banff National Park. The bear was later euthanized after it displayed aggressive behavior, the agency said. The victims were a Canadian couple and their dog, according to Kim Titchener, the founder of Bear Safety and More and also a friend of the family. Titchener, who provides training on bear safety and bear assessments, said such encounters are increasing as more people head outdoors but fatal attacks are extremely rare. "It's really just the reason why we're seeing more attacks, which is more people heading outdoors and unfortunately not being educated on this," she said by telephone, adding that only 14 percent of … [Read more...] about Couple killed in grizzly bear attack in Canada’s Banff National Park
Timeless flavors: 75 years of handmade Teochew pia cakes in Saigon
To mark Mid-Autumn Festival, the people with Teochew heritage from China in Ho Chi Minh City often exchange boxes of crispy-shelled pia , filled with green beans, taro, and salted eggs. Trieu An, the owner of Trieu Minh Hiep pia shop in District 6, notes the rarity of handmade pia cakes in the city. These cakes hold an enduring place in Teochew culture, gracing weddings and Lunar New Year holidays for generations. The name pia itself is derived from the Teochew dialect, meaning cake. In contrast to the popular Cantonese-style mooncakes, pia cakes are mainly reserved for Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations among Teochew people. Within each box, diners will find four pia cakes, each adorned with a golden crust. A box of four Teochew handmade pia cakes at Trieu Minh Hiep Bakery in HCMC's District 6.
