No. 68 Vietnam features national top player Ly Hoang Nam, Le Quoc Khanh, Pham Minh Tuan, Nguyen Van Phuong and Nguyen Dac Tien. Among them, Nam shoulders a heavy task as he is the highest-placed, at No. 247 in single rankings and No. 944 in doubles. Players will compete in five matches. 4 undersea Internet cables face problems, affecting Vietnam’s international connections
Four out of the five submarine Internet cable systems connecting Vietnam to the world are facing problems, with the latest failure recorded on Saturday, seriously affecting users’ international connections, an Internet service provider (ISP) said. The Intra Asia (IA) cable system encountered problems on January 28 when a cable breakage happened about 130 kilometers from a shoreline station in Singapore, leading to a total loss of international data from Vietnam to the city-state, the ISP said. This system, with a total length of 6,800 kilometers, has been in operation since November 2009 to connect Internet users in Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, and Vietnam. It also served as an important route for Internet data transit to the Americas and Europe from users in Vietnam and other regional countries. Military jet crashes in northern Vietnam, 1 pilot killed
HANOI -- A pilot was killed when a Vietnamese air force fighter jet crashed during a training session on Tuesday in the north of the country, state media reported. The accident happened at noon in Yen Bai province and the 30-year-old pilot died while trying to land the Russian-made Su-22 jet at a local airport, the official Vietnam News Agency reported. Vietnam's defence ministry has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, it added. Two pilots were killed in a similar exercise involving an Su-22 in central Vietnam in 2018, while two were forced to eject over the East Vietnam Sea in 2015 when their Su-22 jet went down. A top Vietnamese model has been crowned the winner of the ‘Futurista – Universe Online’ photo contest held to promote the upcoming 2017 Miss Universe Vietnam beauty pageant. Launched in April, the contest called for fans to vote for their favorite photos of Miss Universe Vietnam contestants uploaded on the competition’s official Facebook page. Scores were calculated based on the number of ‘likes,’ ‘comments’ and ‘shares’ that the photos received, results of which were independent from the main event. Vietnam is considered to be one of the few safest countries in the world, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2017 report of the Australian Institute for Economic & Peace. The 2017 report highlights how terrorism remains unevenly spread throughout the world. Central America and the Caribbean continues to be the least affected region. There were only 12 deaths recorded in 2016, which accounts for less than 0.4 per cent of all terrorism deaths. Vietnam Airlines Group serves 2.4 million passengers during Tet holiday
The group offered services to nearly 80,000 passengers on nearly 500 flights on January 18. Later on January 29, it recorded around 93,000 passengers with around 550 flights. Compared to the same period three years ago, the number of passengers served by Vietnam Airlines increased by some 20%. Though the number of flights increased, Vietnam Airlines’ on-time performance (OTP) remained high, at about 90%. To ensure good services during the holiday, the group took a number of solutions, from making the most of wide-body aircraft, increasing night flights to enhancing ground staff and promoting online check-ins. Driver faces charges after leaving motorcyclist for dead in central Vietnam
Nguyen Thi Hang, 31, a citizen of Yen Thanh District of Nghe An Province, is facing the charge of "not helping someone in a life-threatening situation" under the Penal Code, prosecutors said Tuesday. Police said at around 10 p.m. on October 2 last year, Hang stopped her five-seat car on National Highway 1A in Can Loc District of Ha Tinh Province, which neighbors Nghe An, and left the car to do some personal business. There were two others with her in the car. Nguyen Cong Phuong, 32, a resident of nearby Thua Thien-Hue Province, was driving a motorbike right behind the car, but could not stop in time and slammed into the back of Hang’s parked car. The collision caused Phuong injuries so severe that he could not move out of the street by himself. A frightened Hang decided to leave Phuong lying on the street and drove away.
