A family in Thai Nguyen Province, northern Vietnam on Wednesday voluntarily handed over six tigers they had kept in captivity for nearly 20 years to the Hanoi Wild Animal Rescue Center in Hanoi. The Thai Nguyen Department of Forest Protection and its subordinate in Thai Nguyen City of the namesake province coordinated with the Hanoi Department of Forest Protection and the Hanoi Wild Animal Rescue Center received the six tigers from the family of Nguyen Khac Thuong, residing in Thinh Dan Commune, Thai Nguyen City. The six tigers would be sent to the Hanoi Wild Animal Rescue Center for further care. Companies in northern Vietnam voice outcry over power cut
Several enterprises in the northern region of Vietnam have decried repeated power outages after a region-wide electricity cut paralyzed their production activities. A representative of state utility Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said that power would be cut in the region by up to 30 percent. According to a representative of an apparel firm active in Viet Hung Industrial Park in Ha Long City under Quang Ninh Province, the firm’s production was in a turmoil due to unstable power supply. Power outages have forced the company to constantly run its own generators, leading to a surge in production costs, the representative said, adding that the firm might halt operations if the blackout continues. “Due to global economic difficulties, we have adopted various measures to secure orders to maintain work for over 1,000 employees, but massive power outages have prompted us to use generators,” said the representative. According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Foreign Investment Agency (FIA), accumulatively as of May 20, total foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows into Vietnam reached $10.86 billion, a drop of 7.3 per cent on-year, the fall is getting smaller than in previous months. Of this, newly registered capital was $5.26 billion, up 27.8 per cent on-year; additionally registered capital was $2.28 billion, down 59.4 per cent; and capital contribution and share purchase $3.32 billion, up 67.2 per cent. Do Nhat Hoang, FIA director-general, said that the rise of newly registered investment in the first five months is much higher than that in the first four months (11 per cent). Chinese energy storage, battery firms consider big investments in Vietnam
HANOI -- Two Chinese makers of energy storage systems and batteries are weighing investments worth hundreds of millions of dollars in Vietnam, industry and government sources said. The combined value of the investments could exceed $1 billion, according to one person with direct knowledge of the discussions. A growing number of Chinese companies are launching or expanding manufacturing projects in Vietnam, a global export hub thanks to its array of free trade deals and cheap labour. Xiamen Hithium Energy Storage Technology, a startup that is expanding in Europe and the U.S., has approached officials and industry managers in Vietnam to potentially invest up to $900 million to build a plant on more than 30 hectares of industrial land, the person said. Pham Thu Hang, deputy head of the Press Information Department and deputy spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been promoted to acting head of the department and official spokesperson of the ministry. The ministry organized a ceremony to hand over the promotion decision to the new spokesperson on Thursday. As per the decision, Hang becomes the fifth female spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her predecessor is Le Thi Thu Hang, who serves as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
