The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam yesterday said that they have officially launched the online international driving permit (IDP) granting service. The directorate’s staff is responsible for examining documents and confirming receipt of them to applicants’ emails. The service’s users will make payment online. IDP applicants need to have valid driver's licenses made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which information is included in national database, banking accounts for online payment. The online granting is applied to international not normal drivers’ licenses. Those applying for the normal licenses still need to be present at permit granting agencies to have health check. Domestic driving license is the main database for IDP granting. The Hanoitimes - Hanoi’s transport department announced that since March 1, 2016, Hanoi will issue international driving permits (IDP) for both Vietnamese and foreign residents. Vietnamese and foreign drivers can now register for international driving permits. Residents who want to obtain the licence should submit a valid motorbike or car driving licence granted by Vietnam, and an application form along with a fee of 135,000 VND (6 USD) to the department. Foreigners must also include their permanent resident cards. The IDP will be issued within five working days after the required documents are submitted at No.2 Phung Hung street or No.16 Cao Ba Quat street. People, who want to apply for an international driving permit (IDP), are required to call the helpline (08) 1081 in advance to arrange a meeting for registration submission at 252 Ly Chinh Thang Street in District 3. I am from Thailand and currently working in Vietnam. I was granted a driver's license in Vietnam last year. May I apply for an international driving permit (IDP) in Vietnam? What must I do to get that? According to the Vietnamese law (the Ministry of Transport’s Circular No. 29/2015/TT-BGTVT dated July 6, 2015), Vietnamese and foreigners with permanent residence cards granted by Vietnamese authorities, who have been granted driver's licenses which are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and remain valid, may apply for IDPs. However, you have to wait until October 1 this year to send your application to the Vietnam Road Administration or the Transport Department of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Other provincial-level Transport Departments will grant IDPs later once fully equipped for the job.
