Vietnam agriculture ministry urges aid for fishermen as rising fuel prices keep them ashore
The constant rise in fuel prices has caused up to 55 percent of 99,000 fishing boats throughout Vietnam to stay ashore to avoid losses, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, which is calling for financial supports for fishermen. Fuel has become a so huge expense that many fishermen in the country are having trouble making a living. Gasoline and oil demand for fishing activities averages out at 330 million liters per month, according to the agriculture ministry, while the price of diesel 0.05S, the main fuel for fishing vessels, has spiked by 65 percent, or VND11,441 (US$0.49) per litter, since December 2021. In total, fuel costs needed to maintain normal fishing activities have skyrocketed by about VND3.776 trillion ($162.4 million) a month. While fuel costs usually account for 45-60 percent of fishing expenses, the other costs have also increased by 10-15 percent, raising the total expenses by 35-48 percent on average. Vietnam ranks amongst most optimistic tourism communities in Asia-Pacific
Vietnam was recently named amongst the top three Asia-Pacific countries where people have regained their confidence in travel. According to the Travel Confidence Index, a report commissioned by leading online travel company Booking.com, the Vietnamese population is the second most confident in travel, with 85 percent of Vietnamese travelers sharing that they intend to travel at some point in the next 12 months. Numbers one and two on the list were India (86 percent) and China (79 percent). The online survey, which polled 11,000 travelers from 11 countries and territories across Asia and Oceania between April and May 2022, aimed to track the impact of geopolitical and societal diversities in the region, as well as the varied response to the COVID-19 pandemic, on overall confidence levels when it comes to travel. Rehab center staff held for selling drugs to addicts in northern Vietnam
Police in the northern Vietnamese province of Thai Binh announced on Friday the temporary arrest of a male worker of a rehabilitation center in Dong Hung District after he had been caught red-handed selling drugs to addicts at the facility. Nguyen Xuan Bien, a 40-year-old resident of Kien Xuong District in the same province, was working as a contract medical employee at the provincial center for drug addiction treatment and social care when undercover police officers discovered that he stored and sold drugs to some addicts receiving treatment at the Dong Hung District-based facility. Hoang Hoa Tham, director of the rehab center, affirmed Bien’s arrest shortly after. The Dong Hung District police are working on documentation to handle the case in accordance with the law. Sea leisure activities suspended following reports of dead corals at nature reserve in Vietnam
The management board of Nha Trang Bay in south central Khanh Hoa Province declared on Friday that all swimming and diving activities at Hon Mun Nature Reserve will be suspended beginning Monday next week and lasting until further notice. The decision was made as a result of the recent bleaching, damage, and decline of many coral species at Hon Mun Nature Reserve and other areas in Nha Trang Bay. According to the management board, the suspension of ocean leisure activities in the areas surrounding Hon Mun Nature Reserve is to comply with the notice issued by the People's Committee of Nha Trang on Friday. The purpose of the suspension is to survey and evaluate the current situation, identify vulnerable locations, and develop a strategy to preserve the Nha Trang Bay Marine Protected Area in the near future. Australia supports Vietnam build circular economy
The Plastics Innovation Hub aims to reduce plastic waste in Vietnam by driving collaboration and promoting using science and innovation. The hub is an initiative of Aus4Innovation – a development assistance program sponsored by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and managed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) – Australia’s national science agency, in strategic cooperation with Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology. According to Mr. Kim Wimbush, Director of Aus4Innovation Program, scientific, technological and innovative solutions will support the Vietnamese government to reach its targets in dealing with plastic waste and building a circular economy. Vietnam Security Summit 2022 held in Hanoi
According to the Government Information Security Commission, in 2021, more than 45,000 out of 76,977 cyber attacks on some key network systems were carried out in the form of exploiting vulnerabilities. There were about 14,000 network scanning attacks, more than 12,000 targeted attacks, more than 7,300 authentication attacks, nearly 7,000 malware attacks, and about 650 denial-of-service attacks. Major reasons behind the problem was the use of software without copyright, and users’ lack of awareness of cybersecurity. So far this year, the commission has detected more than 48,600 attacks targeting major networks, which means the number of cyber attacks is still rising, bringing more threats to the process of digital Government building and the development of digital economy and society. Addressing the three-day U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment, which concluded on June 23, Giang said that in 2022, Vietnam has donated 500,000 USD to the U.N.’s humanitarian funds and 1 million USD to the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) mechanism. Vietnam has also coordinated with other ASEAN member states, through the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA) and U.N. offices, to provide humanitarian assistance for Myanmar people. The diplomat affirmed that peace and stability are prerequisites to ensure safe and uninterrupted humanitarian access for those in need. The energy used by high-rise buildings in Vietnam accounts for around 35-40 percent of the country’s total energy consumption . A survey by real estate service firm Cushman & Wakefield (CWK) showed that around 40 percent of gas emissions came from real estate. According to the Vietnam Green Building Council, there are about 200 green buildings across the country. At the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021 (COP26), Vietnam committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
