Designer Minh Hanh, Director of Vietnam Fashion Design Institute in Ho Chi Minh City will represent the country in a fashion show titled "Water festival" in Liuzhou in China on October 3. The designer will present her latest collection titled "Duong chan troi cua nuoc" (Horizon lines on water) which include 30 hand-made embroidered garments made of brocade and silk. Designers from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, India, Malaysia, China and Indonesia will also participate in the event. They will present their collections featuring a mix of traditional cultures and a breath of modern life. Minh Hanh is a veteran fashion designer in the country. She has received many national and international awards. Designer Nguyen Trong Hoang at the ceremony (Middle) PANO - Nguyen Trong Hoang, a young fashion designer from Ho Chi Minh City, was presented with the first prize in the Vietnam Collection Grand Prix 2007 on September 23 at Quan Ngua Sporting Hall in Hanoi. The contest is the biggest annual event of the fashion industry for young Vietnamese fashion designers. As many as 25 candidates including 13 from Ho Chi Minh City, 5 from Hanoi and 7 from other provinces competed in the final. Some of them are living and studying in foreign countries such as the US, France and Singapore. They were selected from 1,104 candidates with over 5,600 fashion models. The fashion industry in Vietnam can be summed up in three words - mass production, label slavery, and fairy tale fantasy. While in many so-called "fashion cradles" of the world such as Paris, Milan, New York and Tokyo fashion is a culture, a part of history, and acceptance, Vietnam, despite the international investments mushrooming via glamorous flagship stores commanding an inspirational presence in touristy districts, still needs in-depth education to truly appreciate and be able to grasp the core aspect of fashion being much deeper than just skin level. Many Vietnamese could care less about fashion because "survival" alone is tough enough following the widening gap between the rich and poor induced by the growing economy.
