Hanoi Times - Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) recently released an annual economic report providing three scenarios for the nation's macro-economy outlook this year. According to this report, no matter what scenario we follow, the 2008 economic growth will be lower than what we expected when joining WTO as well as the early targeted plan. So, should we be pessimistic about our economy this year? Answering the question, Mr. Vo Tri Thanh, Head of the International Department for Economic Integration Policy Research under CIEM said: - With three growth scenarios: optimistic (7.6%), basic (7.2%) and pessimistic (6.7%) I think that the most likely one is the pessimistic scenario. In the report released on Tuesday, HSBC noted the world is transfixed on the eurozone, with low expectations that European leaders will figure out concrete solutions to completely solve the crisis. Meanwhile in Vietnam, it is hoped that the slowing of growth could be a catalyst for the country to get rid of the burden on the economy. The main issue in Vietnam is that the State corporate sector is still predominating over the economy, accounting for some 40% of GDP. WB: Vietnam economy grows amid fiscal risks Tu Hoang By Tu Hoang - The Saigon Times Daily HANOI - Vietnam’s expected economic growth of 6.5% this year is a good performance though it is facing fiscal risks, the World Bank (WB) said in its report released on December 2 on the country’s recent economic developments. Victoria Kwakwa, WB Country Director for Vietnam, said the medium-term economic growth outlook for Vietnam is underpinned by stronger domestic demand, robust exports, low inflation and improved confidence. “This is a good time to solidify macroeconomic stability and rebuild policy buffers including through decisive efforts to rein in fiscal imbalances and tackle remaining vulnerabilities in the banking sector,” Kwakwa said in a statement. More PE investors upbeat about Vietnam economy Binh Nguyen By Binh Nguyen - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC - More private equity (PE) investors are optimistic about Vietnam’s outlook over the next 12 months given improvements in economic growth and stable macro-economic factors in this market, according to Grant Thornton Vietnam.
