Vietnam seeks UK assistance for HCMC financial center
Vietnam wants to learn from the experience of developed countries, including the U.K., in developing a financial center, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue told the Acting Mayor of the City of London Peter Estlin. He noted that the city of London was one of the biggest financial centers in the world. Hue met Estlin during his June 28-30 official visit to the U.K. Estlin said the U.K. was willing to partner with Vietnam at different levels, including developing a financial market and improving its business credit rating to grow the bond market. He also expressed support for a partnership between U.K. banks and Vietnamese counterparts to help Ho Chi Minh City become a financial center. Vietnam’s economic growth accelerates on back of exports, manufacturing: Bloomberg

(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s economic growth accelerated faster than expected in the second quarter of this year, as a recovery in exports and manufacturing helped offset risks from coronavirus outbreaks and rising oil prices, Bloomberg reported. The US-based news agency cited data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) saying the Vietnamese economy expanded 7.72% year-on-year in the April-June period, compared to 5.05% of the previous quarter. That was quicker than the median estimate for a 5.9% gain in a Bloomberg survey, and the highest level since at least the first quarter of 2013, it said. The performance helped lift growth in the first-half to 6.42% from a year ago, beating the GSO’s forecast for a 5.5% pace. The government targets full-year growth at 6%-6.5%. Vietnam court sentences four to death for transporting, trading 45kg of narcotics
The People’s Court in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam on Thursday sentenced four people to death for illicitly transporting and trading 45 kilograms of drugs. The death penalty was handed down to Vo Anh Dat, 42, Dang Xuan Anh, 49, Nguyen Hoa Hiep, 36, and Hoang Trung Hau, 35. They were convicted of the illegal transportation, trading, and possession of narcotics. The fifth defendant, 32-year-old Truong Tan Dat, received a two-year prison term for the illegal possession of narcotics. The indictment showed that Vo Anh Dat visited an area near Cau Treo Border Gate in north-central Ha Tinh Province in September 2021 to buy VND5 billion (US$214,800) worth of drugs from a Laotian man. The narcotics, which included 40 kilograms of crystal meth and five kilograms of ketamine, were expected to be sold to Bui Thien Nhan in Ho Chi Minh City for VND11.3 billion ($485,500), according to Dat and Nhan’s deal. Vietnam’s labor ministry requests support for Vietnamese victims in toxic gas leak in Jordan
The Vietnamese Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs has recently asked relevent agencies and businesses to provide support for five Vietnamese nationals who were killed and seven others injured by chlorine gas released by a dropped tank at Jordan’s Port of Aqaba on Monday. The Vietnamese victims had been working on the Hong Kong-registered Forest 6 vessel when the chlorine tank fell from a crane onto its deck, said the Vietnamese Embassy in Saudi Arabia concurrently with Jordan on Wednesday. The Department of Overseas Labor has requested companies that have provided seafarers to the ship to urgently supply necessary support to the wounded crew members and the families of the dead in the accident. Agencies concerned will announce the names and other details of the Vietnamese victims in the toxic gas blast, the department said, adding that any wounded victim wishing to be repatriated should be supported by the companies in conjunction with relevant agencies.
