Vietnam’s robusta: the go-to coffee bean in a warmer world?
GIA LAI -- Bitter and earthy. Fit for instant brews only. Robusta coffee has a dire reputation, but a small group of farmers in Vietnam is trying to turn the bean's fortunes around as a warming world threatens the industry. As an interior designer in trendy Ho Chi Minh City, Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, 42, largely stayed clear of Vietnamese coffee, puzzling over why it didn't taste as good as cups from abroad. Now, nearly a decade later, she runs her own coffee farm -- "Mori" -- in the remote Central Highlands, cultivating robusta she believes can match the world's favourite bean, arabica, in quality and flavour. "My beans have a fruity, flowery smell, and they taste strong -- but in a gentle way," Ngoc told AFP at her farm close to the city of Pleiku, in the heart of the Vietnamese robusta region. "Vietnamese farmers need to know it is possible to make these beans taste good." 'Vicious circle of bad quality' Long scorned by giants such as Starbucks, robusta -- which has … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s robusta: the go-to coffee bean in a warmer world?
Vietnamese coffee finds ways to gain foothold in RoK market
Statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs show that in the first two months of 2023, Vietnam earned more than 13 million USD from over 6,400 tons of coffee it shipped to the East Asian nation. The RoK is assessed to be the world’s second biggest consuming market of coffee, with the market scale of around 6.5 billion USD. Vietnam mainly exports coffee beans, canned coffee and instant coffee to the RoK. The scale of this segment in the RoK is about 2.5 billion USD, while the scope of filter coffee used in shops is much larger, with 4 billion USD. Vietnamese exporters should pay more attention to this market segment, according to the Vietnam Trade Office in the RoK. However, they are facing difficulties in increasing the export to the Korean market, as Vietnam mainly ships Robusta abroad, while Koreans prefer Arabica. In addition, Vietnam is also facing considerable competition from other producers like Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Guatemala. This year, the … [Read more...] about Vietnamese coffee finds ways to gain foothold in RoK market

Reporter: How do you evaluate the relations between Vietnam and Italy since the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic ties 50 years ago, especially since the upgrading of the relationship to a strategic partnership in January 2013? Ambassador Antonio Alessandro: I would use the words of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, who has just released a warm message of congratulations on the 50th anniversary of Italy - Vietnam diplomatic relations. Foreign tourists calling it a ‘waste’ not to leave Hanoi’s Train Street open
Hanoi Train Street, famous for its makeshift coffee shops along the train track, runs for around two kilometers from Le Duan through Tran Phu, Cua Dong and Phung Hung Streets in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter. While one part of its was blocked off last September due to safety concerns, another part between Tran Phu and Dien Bien Phu streets is not and many foreign tourists can still be found there. "From a safety perspective, sitting to enjoy coffee along the train track could be worrying, but I haven't seen it anywhere else in the world, so it’s unique," Kathy, a female foreign tourist said. "This is the first time I’ve seen a train running so close to houses and the sight is really spectacular," said John, also a tourist. For John, sitting next to the track and watching the train run through rows of old houses was a "one-of-a-kind and unique experience." Tourists film a train with their phones as it runs through old houses and coffee shops on Hanoi Train … [Read more...] about Foreign tourists calling it a ‘waste’ not to leave Hanoi’s Train Street open
