People rush back to city after long holiday Thanh Hoa By Thanh Hoa - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – Huge numbers of holidaymakers returned to HCMC on May 3 after the four-day holiday of Reunification Day and International Labor Day, causing heavy traffic congestion at the city’s gateways. Local media reported long queues of vehicles at Cat Lai Ferry Station in District 2 late in the afternoon as many holidaymakers came back from the beach city of Vung Tau in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, deputy director of Cat Lai Ferry Station, said the station ferried around 320,000 passengers from Saturday to on May 3. Nguyen Thi Hoai Phuong, deputy director of Vietnam Expressway Services Engineering JSC (VECE) which manages HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, said over 190,000 autos used the expressway during the holiday, up 22,000 from a year earlier. Vietnamese workers are enjoying a four-day holiday, starting on Saturday, to commemorate Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1), with many eager to pack their swimsuits and head to the nearest beach. However, many vacationers, especially those who have planned their holidays in central provinces, are shying away from visiting these places after the mysterious fish deaths were discovered in Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien-Hue in early April.
