The Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP) handed over to U.S. agencies two sets of remains believed to belong to American soldiers who died during the war in Vietnam that ended in 1975. The handover was conducted at a ceremony held at Da Nang International Airport on Thursday, during which the remains were received by representatives of the U.S. MIA (missing-in-action) Office in Hanoi and the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The remains were found during the 146th and 147th joint searches by the two countries held from February to June this year, the VNOSMP said. After examining the remains, Vietnamese and American forensic specialists concluded that they might be associated with U.S. servicemen who were reported as missing in action in Vietnam in wartime, so a decision was made to transport them to Hawaii for further verification. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s economic growth accelerated faster than expected in the second quarter of this year, as a recovery in exports and manufacturing helped offset risks from coronavirus outbreaks and rising oil prices, Bloomberg reported. The US-based news agency cited data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) saying the Vietnamese economy expanded 7.72% year-on-year in the April-June period, compared to 5.05% of the previous quarter. That was quicker than the median estimate for a 5.9% gain in a Bloomberg survey, and the highest level since at least the first quarter of 2013, it said. The performance helped lift growth in the first-half to 6.42% from a year ago, beating the GSO’s forecast for a 5.5% pace. The government targets full-year growth at 6%-6.5%. The Vietnamese Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs has recently asked relevent agencies and businesses to provide support for five Vietnamese nationals who were killed and seven others injured by chlorine gas released by a dropped tank at Jordan’s Port of Aqaba on Monday. The Vietnamese victims had been working on the Hong Kong-registered Forest 6 vessel when the chlorine tank fell from a crane onto its deck, said the Vietnamese Embassy in Saudi Arabia concurrently with Jordan on Wednesday. The Department of Overseas Labor has requested companies that have provided seafarers to the ship to urgently supply necessary support to the wounded crew members and the families of the dead in the accident. Tropical storm Chaba, the first storm to affect Vietnam this year, is gathering strength, with wind speeds near its centre reaching 89-102 kilometres per hour. According to the national weather service, the system was located at 400 kilometres east-southeast of China’s Hainan Island at 7am on July 1. Chaba is forecast to travel in a northwest direction for the next 24 hours at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour and is likely to strengthen further, packing winds of 103-117 kilometres per hour. At 7am on July 2, the tropical storm will be located about 370 kilometres east-southeast of Quang Ninh Province, before continuing northwest and to make landfall in the southeast of China’s Guangxi Province the following day.
