Last week, Cambodia successfully hosted the ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit, where major ASEAN dialogue partners attended the forum and met briefly with their counterparts. This week, Indonesia hosts the most difficult G20 Summit in Bali, after a year full of preparatory meetings from Sherpa, ministers, and engagement groups. Thailand hosts APEC meetings attended by APEC political, economic, and business leaders. General Statistics Office (GSO) reported that Vietnam’s total agro-forestry-fishery export-import turnover in the first 10 months of this year topped $82.1 billion, an increase of 10.2 per cent over the same period in 2021. Exports reached $44.9 billion, up 14.1 per cent, and imports surpassed $37.2 billion, an increase of 5.8 per cent. The sector’s trade surplus stood at $7.7 billion, up 83.7 per cent on-year, while that of the whole economy hit $9.4 billion. So far this year, agricultural exports continue to have a substantial stimulative effect on the economy, despite numerous fluctuations in the commodity market, transportation issues, and high production expenses resulting from the nearly 50 per cent increase in oil and petrol prices since the beginning of the year. The head of the World Trade Organization (WTO) warned on Wednesday that several major economies face a real risk of sliding into recession as the war in Ukraine, rising food and fuel costs, and soaring inflation cloud the global outlook. "It may not happen everywhere, but several key countries risk sliding into recession," WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told Reuters on the sidelines of the G20 leaders' meeting in Bali, Indonesia. "Of course, the impact of that can be quite significant for emerging markets and poor countries, which need external demand from the developed countries to recover." The Geneva-based trade body last month projected global trade to rise just 1.0% in 2023, down sharply from an estimated 3.5% rise for this year.
