Foreign tourist stream into Vietnam despite sea tensions: tourism official
Vietnam remains a safe, friendly and fascinating destination for international tourists, an official from the country's General Department of Tourism said during a press conference on Thursday. Deputy head of the office Nguyen Manh Cuong added that rumors about hostility toward Chinese or Chinese-speaking tourists were totally wrong. China has been widely condemned for its provocative actions in the East Sea (known internationally as South China Sea) where it is asserting an illegal authority over waters claimed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan. "The disputes in the East Sea haven't had much of an affect on foreign tourism arrivals in Vietnam," Cuong said. Vietnam index eases; further fall likely on sea dispute
Vietnam's benchmark VN Index ended down on Tuesday but the losses were limited by buying in some blue-chips. However, further falls are likely in coming days due to continued tension over a sea dispute with China, analysts said. The index lost 0.61 percent to close at 513.91 points, slowing from a fall of nearly 5 percent the previous session. Vietnam and the Philippines will carry out joint maritime research in the East Sea in April 2005, said Foreign Minister spokesman Le Dung. The spokesman, on March 15th, answered a Vietnam News Agency correspondent's question on the information that Vietnam and the Philippine will carry out joint research on the East Sea in April. The spokesman Le Dung said: "According to the agreement reached between the two sides at the 3rd session of the Vietnam - Philippines joint committee for bilateral cooperation in Manila in February 2003, the Vietnam Science and Technology Institute and the Sea and Ocean Centre of the Philippine Foreign Ministry will organise a survey for joint sea research on the East Sea in early April 2005.
