Part 2: Vietnam Law of the Sea adds more legal basis to UNCLOS
An important legal framework On the basis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, the National Assembly of Vietnam passed the Vietnam Law of the Sea on June 21, 2012. The law started to officially take effect from January 1, 20213, serving as an important legal framework to regulate Vietnam’s relations at sea and oceans. Dr. Tran Cong Truc shared that the Vietnam Law of the Sea has 54 articles in seven chapters. There are four contents legalized in the law, namely the demarcation of sea areas and continental shelves and assertion of sovereignty over islands and archipelagos; activities in Vietnamese waters; marine economic development; and the management and protection of sea and islands. Penny Wong arrives in Hanoi, affirming new Australian cabinet relations with Vietnam
The Australian top diplomat said the ties between the countries run deep. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong today [June 27] met with Vietnamese counterpart Bui Thanh Son in Hanoi as part of her three-day visit to affirm the new Australian government’s commitments to continue the Strategic Partnership with Vietnam. Vietnam continues to be one of the top FDI receivers in ASEAN
According to the latest report by HSBC, total FDI to ASEAN-6 (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines) has averaged nearly $127 billion per year since 2010, approximately three times more than the average over the previous decade – the average for 2000-09 was $41 billion. Similarly, net FDI – inbound minus outbound direct investment – has averaged nearly $54 billion a year since 2010, almost four times the average from the previous decade. Thinking of FDI-driven economic success stories, Vietnam naturally stands out. The country has turned itself into a rising star in global supply chains, gaining a substantial global market share in many sectors including textiles, footwear, and consumer electronics. Taiwan rebuffs Philippines complaint about S.China Sea live fire drills
The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs, in a message on Twitter late on Tuesday, lodged a "strong objection over the unlawful live fire drills" to be carried out by Taiwan this week around the island, known internationally as Itu Aba, or Ba Binh in Vietnam. "This illegal activity raises tensions and complicates the situation in the South China Sea," it said. Taiwan's foreign ministry said in a statement the island was part of the territory of the Republic of China - Taiwan's formal name - and that it enjoyed all relevant rights accorded by international law. "Our country has the right to conduct routine exercises on Taiping Island and related maritime areas. In order to ensure the safety of maritime traffic and fishing boats operating in adjacent maritime areas, we notify the relevant regional countries in advance before each live-fire drill," it said.
