(Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - The General Administration of Customs (GAC) of China has just approved the pilot import of Vietnamese passion fruits from July 1, according to the Vietnam Sanitary and Phytosanitary Notification Authority and Enquiry Point (SPS Vietnam). SPS Vietnam, which is under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), said that GAC suggested Vietnam closely monitor packaging specifications and issues related to pest control, growing area code, and record keeping, to ensure quality and food safety hygiene before exporting the fruits to China . In addition, the Chinese side has introduced five pest species subject to quarantine that are not allowed to appear in passion fruits export ed to the country. Storm Chaba poses no more danger to Vietnam’s northeast as it makes landfall
It made landfall along the coast of Maoming City in China's Guangdong Province at around 3 p.m. Saturday, Chinese newspapers reported. At 4 p.m. it lay centered around 320 kilometers to the east of Quang Ninh Province, home to Ha Long Bay, with a maximum wind speed of 117 kph, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. It will move northwest at a speed of 10-15 kph and is expected to weak into a tropical depression by Sunday morning with winds decreasing to 61 kph. Vietnam’s northeastern region should expect rains of 40-80 mm, and more than 100 mm in some places, between Saturday evening and Sunday. A day earlier weather experts had expected the region to be hit by torrential downpours of up to 150-350 mm a day. Rainfall of 180 mm a day is considered heavy. China’s Wuxi tightens COVID curbs as new clusters emerge
Wuxi, a Chinese manufacturing hub, tightened its COVID-19 control measures on Sunday after reporting 31 new coronavirus cases, as the country continues battling clusters of the disease under a zero-COVID policy. The city in the Yangtze Delta on China's central coast, halted operations at many public venues located underground, including shops and supermarkets. Dine-in services in restaurants were suspended, and the government advised people to work from home. Mainland China reported 473 new COVID-19 cases for July 2, of which 104 were symptomatic and 369 were asymptomatic, the National Health Commission said on Sunday. That compares with 268 new cases a day earlier - 72 symptomatic and 196 asymptomatic infections, which China counts separately. There were no new deaths, keeping the nation's death toll to 5,226. Dozens missing in shipwreck during Chaba typhoon
An engineering vessel that was 160 nautical miles southwest of Hong Kong "suffered substantial damage and broke into two pieces" and the 30-member crew abandoned ship, according to the Hong Kong Government Flying Service. Three people had been rescued as of 3:00 p.m. local time (0700 GMT) and were taken to hospital for treatment, authorities said. Dramatic footage provided by Hong Kong authorities showed a person being airlifted onto a helicopter while waves crashed over the deck of the semi-submerged ship below. The three survivors said other crew members may have been swept away by waves before the first helicopter arrived, according to a government statement. Vietnamese lychees hit the market in over 30 countries
To avoid complete dependence on China, Vietnamese lychee farmers used this year’s harvest as an opportunity to expand their footprint across the globe by exporting to over 30 international markets, as well as strengthening their domestic position. During this year’s lychee harvest season, which typically falls over summer, Vietnam’s lychee famers have been focusing their efforts on selling to industrial parks and shipping their products to Japan, the U.S., and several other countries, rather than relying primarily on China, a long-standing market, to purchase their fruit.
