At a meeting with the coaches and athletes at Hanoi National Sports Training Centre on February 12, Thien congratulated Vietnam’s sports sector and wished athletes luck for more success in 2019. The minister also wished all athletes to be confident and determined to bring glory to the nation in the regional, continental and global events this year. Accordingly, teams are allowed to replace their players from the final list of 23 up to six hours before their first match, but overall, they are almost the official squads that the national teams across the continent will bring to the 2019 Asian Cup. According to the current list registered with the organisers, Vietnam have the youngest average age at only 23. Notably, in the squad of 23 Vietnamese players, there are 16 names from the U23 age group. In particular, the youngest player is defender Doan Van Hau (19). Ngo Son Dinh won Vietnam’s first gold at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, lifting a total of 262 kilograms. On the first day of the tournament, the 17-year-old athlete shone in the 56 kilogram men’s category, particularly in the snatch, with three successful lifts. He lifted 114kg in his third attempt. In the clean and jerk discipline, Dinh managed lifts of 138 kilograms, 142 kilograms and 148 kilograms. Dinh was followed by Thai weightlifter Natthawat Chomchuen, who succeeded with the 130 kilogram lift, but failed with the 148 and 154 kilogram weights. The bronze medal was won by Czech athlete Frantisek Polak with a total lift of 233 kilograms. (Photo: Thethaoplus) – Vietnam enjoyed a good start at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina as weightlifter Ngo Son Dinh won a gold medal for the country at the men’s 56kg event on October 7, the first day of competition at the Games. The Tien Giang-born lifter won one gold and two bronze medals in the men’s 56kg at the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship last year. He also won three gold medals at the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championship and two bronzes at the World Youth Weightlifting Championship this year.
