Shrimp exports reach US$ 2.25 billion In the first 11 months of 2012, Vietnam's shrimp exports totaled US$2.06 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 4.7 percent. Half of the top 10 import markets suffered significant declines, including the US (15.6 percent), the EU (25 percent), Canada (14 percent), ASEAN (22 percent), and Switzerland (11 percent). VASEP attributed the falling export value to unstable shrimp supply caused by diseases, as well as 15-25 percent increases in input costs. In the first five months of this year shrimp exports to Japan grew strongly, but the boom was stymied—reducing by 1.5 to 17 percent—when the country began examining all Vietnamese shrimp entering the market. In the first four months of this year, Vietnamese seafood exports dropped by 7.1 percent from the same period last year to US$1.058 billion, according to the General Statistics Office. In the reviewed period, the value of seafood exports fell by 7 percent to US$744 million compared with the same period last year. However, in April alone, the export value of the fisheries industry exported US$310 million worth of products, up from March, said the office. Luong Le Phuong, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), put this down to a fall in demand from key seafood export markets such as the US, the EU and Japan. In the first four months of the year, Vietnamese seafood exports fell by 13 percent to the EU, by 9 percent to Japan and by 3.3 percent to the US. Hygiene standards and product quality will be crucial in Vietnam's seafood export in 2006, the chairman of a local industry watchdog has said. Ho Quoc Luc, chairman of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), told the Thai News Service that food hygiene and safety barriers were becoming increasingly stringent. Dried seafood has become one of Vietnam ’s strategic exports and contributes substantially to the seafood industry’s total export revenue. According to the General Department of Customs, in 2009, Vietnam exported nearly 43,000 tonnes of dried seafood to more than 50 countries and territories worldwide, earning over 160 million USD, up 31.2 percent in volume and 9.9 percent in value compared to the previous year. The country’s dried seafood exports have enjoyed a remarkable growth of over 100 percent to some of its markets. The Republic of Korea, ASEAN, China, Japan and Taiwan are major export markets for Vietnam’s dried seafood and account for over 80 percent of the country’s total export market share.
