Việt Nam, Venezuela seek to beef up friendship

During his virtual talks with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Phạm Bình Minh on Friday, Arreaza congratulated Việt Nam on the success of the 13th National Party Congress, while praising the country’s efforts in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic as well as in maintaining economic growth. Minh detailed Việt Nam’s situation and the outcomes of the 13th National Party Congress as well as the country’s COVID-19 response measures and solutions to promote socio-economic development and ensure social security. He said Việt Nam supports efforts by the constitutional government of Venezuela to promote political dialogue based on respecting Venezuela’s Constitution and the aspirations of Venezuelan people, thus solving difficulties and boosting socio-economic development. The two officials focused their discussion on measures to enhance the friendship between the two countries. The two sides agreed to maintain mechanisms to promote co-operation, especially the Việt Nam-Venezuela Intergovernmental Committee for Cooperation and the Political Consultation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs. They also decided to increase exchanges between ministries, sectors and businesses, and foster trade and investment ties in areas of mutual interest such as agriculture, oil and gas, health, commerce, culture, and sports and tourism. The two sides pledged to promote people-to-people exchanges and the operation of friendship associations. Export commodities to face greater scrutiny

Workers operate machines at a steel mill in northern Việt Nam. — VNA/VNS Photo HÀ NỘI — Fifteen types of export commodities will be put under strict scrutiny by Vietnamese customs authorities starting this year as part of a campaign to fight origin fraud, illegal transhipment and unfair trade practices, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. The general department said the campaign would play an important role in helping Vietnamese firms avoid potential trade protective measures and in protecting their rights and interests. For the campaign, it has proposed a list of commodities including wood and wood furniture, sporting equipment, interior decorative items, steel products, electronics, solar battery, tires, footwear and handbags among others. The department will continue scanning for other commodities with high-risk of origin fraud, illegal transhipment and unfair trade practices, which may soon be added to the list. It has instructed its branch offices across the country to conduct additional investigations and issue severe fines to violators. A major focus of the campaign is to monitor exports to markets like the US, the EU and India, which have seen rapid development in recent years. Investigators will look into products that are assembled and processed in Viêt Nam with almost all their raw materials brought in from abroad. Firms established since 2018 that have reported abnormally high export volume within a short period of time or abnormally high production volume compared to their infrastructure should expect greater scrutiny as the campaign moves on. In a recent report, the general department said it issued fines to the tune of VND77 billion (US$3.3 million) last year for origin fraud, illegal transhipment and intellectual property rights violations. Beloved Vietnamese actor passes away

Vietnamese actor Trần Hạnh passed away on Thursday aged 92. Photo laodong.vn HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese actor Trần Hạnh, who played poor farmers in many Vietnamese films, passed away on Thursday aged 92. Born in Hà Nội in 1929, Hạnh was a theatre artist and actor in the Vietnamese cinema industry. He was one of the first artists to receive the title of State Artist of Excellence in 1994. After more than 20 years, he was awarded the title of People's Artist, Việt Nam’s top artistic award for a living artist – second only to the often posthumous Hồ Chí Minh Prize, on August 29, 2019 He is famous for his roles as a poor farmer or an old man in unfortunate plight, such as the Party secretary in the movie Làng Nổi (Floating Village), father An in the movie Truyện Cổ Tích Tuổi 17 (Fairy Tale of the 17), father Lài in Tướng Về Hưu (Retired General) and father Mai in the movie Hãy Tha Thứ Cho Em (Please Forgive Me). On the stage of Hà Nội’s Drama Theatre, he played many outstanding roles that won many gold and silver awards at national theatre festivals. His golden age was in the late 1970s and early 1980s during which playing the role of Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Trãi in the play of Lam Sơn Tụ Nghĩa brought him the gold medal at the National Drama Festival in 1980. People's Artist Nguyễn Trung Hiếu, Director of Hanoi Drama Theatre, said the departure of famous artists like Trần Hạnh was a great loss to Vietnamese theatre. Artist Quốc Quân, who co-starred in the film Đời Người Và Những Chuyến Đi (Human Life and Journey) with Hạnh, expressed his admiration for the true, humble and compassionate actor.
