September 21, 2023 by en.qdnd.vn

In his speech, Pham Minh Chinh said that such challenges related to population aging, non-traditional security like climate change, epidemics, food, water resources, energy, transnational crime, and cybercrime are developing fiercely, causing serious consequences, while the global economy is facing many headwinds. According to the PM, the world is facing two choices: passively accepting challenges and risks at a very high price, or proactively adapting to, taking advantage of opportunities, solving challenges, and taking peace, stability and development cooperation as goals, the U.N. Charter and international law as the foundation, and dialogue and collaboration as tools. In particular, Vietnam chooses the second choice and hopes its partners also choose it, Pham Minh Chinh stated. Accordingly, Vietnam chooses the basic foundations to develop the country, with the goal of becoming a developing country with modern industry and high average income by 2030, and a developed, … [Read more...] about Prime Minister delivers policy speech at Georgetown University

Dr. Guido Hildner , German Ambassador said that in his country, the number of employees working in occupations requiring green skills increased 56.7% to 5 million between 2012 and 2020. This shows that the energy transition is a complex and demanding process, but also provides great opportunities to the people and the economies. Noting that Vietnam has set a target of net-zero emission by 2050, the diplomat said that Germany has supported Vietnam in employment transition by training Vietnamese workers in the fields of electricity, electronics and roof-top solar power installation. In Vietnam, parents spend big on children’s education despite economic woes

September 20, 2023 by tuoitrenews.vn

No matter how expensive it is, many Vietnamese families willingly pay for their children’s education in spite of their tight money situation. Vietnamese parents commonly seek the best education for their children while sacrificing their own needs, said Dr. Le Thi Mai Lien, head of the psychology faculty at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Cutting down on all expenditures but for children’s education As soon as her two children enter the new school year earlier this month, a 43-year-old woman named N.T.T., who resides in Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City, had to calculate her family’s expenditure to balance their spending and saving. After the COVID-19 pandemic, T. and her husband's total income decreased by more than VND20 million (approximately US$818) per month, so they have to tighten their belt to stabilize the investment in their children’s education. Years ago when their family was still financially solvent, they would frequently … [Read more...] about In Vietnam, parents spend big on children’s education despite economic woes

Invasive species on the menu at London restaurant

September 21, 2023 by e.vnexpress.net

The idea behind several "invasive species supper clubs", the last of which was served on Tuesday at "zero waste" Silo restaurant in east London, is to "creatively popularize species that are detrimental to the environment", chef Douglas McMaster, who runs the establishment, told AFP . The omnipresent grey squirrels, signal crayfish and Japanese knotweed are all "forces of destruction" that squeeze out local populations, but all are edible and "delicious", he added. The invaders are the subject of a recently published report under the aegis of the UN, which gave rise to calls from experts to "wake up" to the "scourge". A crayfish dish served at Silo, a zero-waste restaurant in London. Photo by AFP/Daniel Leal McMaster would like a legitimate supply chain and for the species to become "an accessible resource" for chefs. But the idea "isn't to popularize these invasive species so there's so much of a demand that we allow them to become more invasive", he stressed. … [Read more...] about Invasive species on the menu at London restaurant

Businesses resilient but grow too slowly

September 21, 2023 by e.vnexpress.net

After every 10 years, the country’s GDP growth speed has reduced 1% compared to the previous period, said Thien, former head of the Vietnam Institute of Economics, at the "Raising strength, clearing resources and helping businesses" conference. The event was part of the Vietnam Socio-Economic Forum 2023 on Tuesday. The economist told the conference that one major cause of business sluggishness was that Vietnamese businesses have to pay interest rates two or three times higher than other countries. Another reason was firms’ limited access to bank loans, he said. Thien noted that by the end of August, credit growth was only 5.5%, less than half of this year’s goal (14%). On the matter of slow growth, director of the legal department of the Vietnam Confederation of Commerce and Industry Dau Anh Tuan said low quality infrastructure in Vietnam is still not able to meet the demands of economic growth. Moreover, he said high production costs have lowered competitiveness. This was … [Read more...] about Businesses resilient but grow too slowly
