Vietnam party chief, president calls for giving private sector its due
Speaking at the opening of the 10th plenum of the 12th Party Central Committee on Thursday, he said, "The private economy is developing well." There should be no discrimination against private companies, and they should be treated equitably, he said. Trong called for appreciating, rewarding and even honoring private companies if they perform well and contribute significantly to the economy. But he also called for maintaining a balance between state-owned and private firms. "It is a fact that state-owned firms have made mistakes and caused losses in the past, but that does not mean we should disregard this sector and totally switch to the private economy." Fifth grader convinces principal to stop back-to-school balloon release
Once she learnt that balloons are made of plastic that is not biodegradable and is harmful to wildlife, Nguyen Nguyet Linh, who will enter the six grade in the upcoming academic year, was worried about the back-to-school-balloon-release-ceremomy held by many schools. So she emailed her principal at Marie Curie School in Hanoi, saying: "I just want to send a message that balloon releases lift dreams of students but sinks the dreams of many wild birds and turtles. " After reading her letter Thusday, school principal Nguyen Xuan Khang replied back within that night, saying he agrees with her and the school will not hold the balloon-releasing ceremony for the 2019-2020 school year. The principal praised Linh, saying many schools have this ceremony, but unlike her, did not think about its negative impacts. Vietnam probes former top naval officer for negligence
The Criminal Investigation Agency under the Ministry of National Defence, in cooperation with military prosecutors, issued the decision on Tuesday, the Vietnam News Agency reported. Hien is now under house arrest. The investigation is part of a fraud and land management case that saw former colonel Dinh Ngoc He sentenced to 12 years in jail in July last year. Hien, 65, was retroactively dismissed as the Commander of Vietnam People's Navy per a decision by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc last month for making "very serious" violations when he was the naval commander between 2004 and 2015. For his wrongdoing, he had already been dismissed from all party positions in June. The Communist Party of Vietnam has four modes of punishment against members: reprimand, warning, demotion and expulsion.
