Eighteen of the 19 U.S. embassies and consulates closed this month due to worries about potential terrorist attacks will reopen on Sunday, the U.S. State Department said on Friday. "Our embassy in Sanaa, Yemen, will remain closed because of ongoing concerns about a threat stream indicating the potential for terrorist attacks emanating from Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. The United States will also keep its consulate in Lahore, Pakistan, shuttered, Psaki said, adding it closed on Thursday due to a "separate credible threat." The United States shut about 20 of its embassies and consulates in the Middle East and Africa on Sunday after saying it had picked up information through surveillance and other means about unspecified terrorist threats. It later said the missions would remain closed through August 10. A worldwide alert said that al Qaeda could be planning attacks in the Middle East and North Africa. At least five people were killed and 29 others injured in Oklahoma as tornadoes raked the U.S. midwest states on Saturday and Sunday, officials said. As the violent weather swept the region, tornadoes or high winds damaged a hospital, homes and cut off power for hundreds of thousands of households, and forecasters warned of more storms on Sunday. The U.S. National Weather Service received 121 reports of possible tornado touchdowns Saturday and early Sunday in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, according to CNN. As the violent storm system could continue to hammer much of the region, CNN quoted a weather expert as reporting that the states in the "bull's-eye" for the most dangerous conditions Sunday will likely be Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. About 300 Customs and Border Protection agents and officers also will be sent to the border region, along with additional helicopters and other surveillance equipment, they said. "The border is more resourced and more secure than it's ever been but the work continues and the challenge remains," said Alan Bersin, commissioner of the Customs and Border Protection agency. The Obama administration has pledged to send up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the area for a year and to seek US$600 million for, among other things, 1,000 new border patrol agents and unmanned aerial detection systems. Violence along the border has been escalating in recent years. Bersin said illegal crossings have begun to fall while seizures of weapons and drugs have risen. … [Read more...] about U.S. troops to arrive at Mexico border
