(Photo: ANTARA) Hanoi (VNA) - US Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Yohannes Abraham has said that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are integral to the economic growth of the region. According to Abraham, supporting SMEs in ASEAN is of critical importance because around 99% of businesses in the ASEAN nations are small and medium-sized. Additionally, 85% of the combined workforce of ASEAN states also works for SMEs. "We think we have a great economic partnership already. And we want to look for ways to enhance it moving forward," he told ANTARA in Jakarta on May 27. The diplomat added that the US is committed to working with ASEAN to boost the region's economy, one of which is through the US-ASEAN Business Council, a group of US companies with investments in ASEAN. In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency ahead of the 10th anniversary of the two countries’ comprehensive partnership (July 2013 - 2023), the former US Ambassador to Vietnam said trade and investment play a big role in this relationship. The visit, which took place on May 16-17, was one of the activities of the Vietnam - U.K. Friendship Year program in celebration of the 50th founding anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties. Do Van Su, deputy director general of the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment Last week, Do Van Su, deputy director general of the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, said the quality and quantity of foreign-headed projects have improved in recent years. “Although the number of large-scale projects has decreased due to the impact of many factors, the quantity of projects overall sees an average increase of 16-19 per cent per year. The average capital of projects is $16 million,” he said. Statistics published by Su’s agency showed that in the first four months of 2023, Vietnam attracted 750 newly registered projects, 386 added-capital projects, and 1,044 paid-in capital, signifying increases of 65.2, 19.5, and 1.8 per cent on-year, respectively.
