A United States aircraft carrier is expected to pay a visit to Vietnam as soon as next year, according to an announcement following a recent meeting between military leaders from the two nations. Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense Ngo Xuan Lich joined talks with U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, as part of his visit to the North American country from August 7 to 10, the Vietnam News Agency reported. During their conversation, the two officials reached consensus that a U.S. aircraft carrier would visit the Southeast Asian nation at the beginning of next year. It will be the first visit by a U.S. carrier to Vietnam since 1975. TV editor nabbed for buying stolen scooters
Police in Hanoi have detained 29-year-old Nguyen Thanh Tung, an editor at the Vietnam Television Corporation (VTC), and another man for buying six scooters even though they knew that the vehicles were stolen property. The editor and his accomplice, Nguyen Quyet, 26, were arrested on August 15 on charges of “harboring or consuming property acquired through the commission of crime by other persons,” under Article 250 of the Penal Code. Tung is a native of Nam Dinh Province but resides in Hanoi, while Quyet is from Ha Nam province and also lives in the capital. On August 13, a traffic police team stopped Nguyen Van Dat, 24, of Ha Nam province, who was driving an Air Blade, for a traffic violation. Since Dat had no papers related to the scooter, police handed the vehicle over to Hanoi’s anti-social crime police for investigation. Authorities remain silent amidst terrible air pollution in Hanoi
The ongoing serious air pollution in Hanoi and northern Vietnam has entered its sixth day, while local authorities are still silent amidst rising concerns. According to Dr. Hoang Tung Duong, president of the Vietnam Clean Air Partnership (VCAP), many northern localities, including Hanoi, have been plagued by horrific air pollution in the past six days. As of Friday morning, air quality in many locations across Hanoi was very unhealthy, evidenced by the statistics of the PAM Air. The air quality index (AQI) in such districts as Ba Dinh, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, and Tay Ho was measured at between 202 and 240. An AQI of 201-300 is considered dangerous to health. Measuring tools operated by the Hanoi People’s Committee also showed similar results.
