At some public hospitals in Vietnam, modern medical equipment, whose procurement was covered by the state budget or private firms, has been left idle, while patients are waiting for treatment. The situation will affect such patients and put them at a disadvantage if it lingers. The healthcare sector is facing difficulties as multiple healthcare officials, including the health minister , have faced criminal charges and been in detention for their wrongdoing in medical equipment procurement, suspending the purchase of medical equipment and medicines. Equipment has no fault As a case in point, two robots, named Mako and Rosa, had been used for joint and cranio-cerebral surgeries at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi since 2017. However, the two robots have been suspended and when they will be put to use again is unknown. Much more children hospitalized for respiratory diseases in Ho Chi Minh City
The number of child inpatients at the respiratory department of Children’s Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City has markedly increased to the extent that medical workers have added more beds along hallways. Despite the added beds, the respiratory department at the District 10-based hospital remains overloaded by the inpatient spike. Doctors and medical workers struggle to tend to each patient while the children's relatives wrestle against the scorching conditions to take care of them. The wave of annual respiratory diseases emerged earlier this year than previous years owing to the early monsoon season, which usually starts in August, according to Dr. Tran Anh Tuan, head of the respiratory department of Children’s Hospital 1. Vietnamese province scrambles to handle people trampling coral reefs
The People’s Committee of Phu Yen Province in south-central Vietnam ordered penalties against people treading on coral reefs at the Hon Yen national relic site on Tuesday. The order came after media reports of damage to the coral reefs caused by local people, tourists, and photographers. The landscape cluster of Hon Yen was recognized as a national relic site in April 2018. This is an ideal destination for seeing coral reefs which are often unveiled at low tides. Afghan quake kills at least 920; toll expected to rise
An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 killed 920 people in Afghanistan early on Wednesday, disaster management officials said, with more than 600 injured and the toll expected to grow as information trickles in from remote mountain villages. Photographs on Afghan media showed houses reduced to rubble, with bodies swathed in blankets lying on the ground. Helicopters were deployed in the rescue effort to reach the injured and fly in medical supplies and food, said an interior ministry official, Salahuddin Ayubi. "The death toll is likely to rise as some of the villages are in remote areas in the mountains and it will take some time to collect details." Wednesday's quake was the deadliest since 2002. It struck about 44 km (27 miles) from the southeastern city of Khost, near the border with Pakistan, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGC) said. Most of the confirmed deaths were in the eastern province of Paktika, where 255 people were killed and more than 200 injured, Ayubi added. Afghanistan earthquake kills at least 1,000, toll expected to rise
The death toll from an earthquake in Afghanistan on Wednesday hit 1,000, disaster management officials said, with more than 600 injured and the toll expected to grow as information trickles in from remote mountain villages. Houses were reduced to rubble and bodies swathed in blankets lay on the ground after the magnitude 6.1 earthquake, photographs on Afghan media showed. An unknown number of people remained stuck under rubble and in outlying areas, health and aid workers said, and rescue operations were complicated by difficult conditions including heavy rains, landslides and many villages being nestled in inaccessible hillside areas. "Many people are still buried under the soil. The rescue teams of the Islamic Emirate have arrived and with the help of local people are trying to take out the dead and injured," a health worker at a hospital in the hard-hit Paktika province said, asking for anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to media. People carry injured to … [Read more...] about Afghanistan earthquake kills at least 1,000, toll expected to rise
New antibody therapies fight cancer, drum up investment
Antibody therapies are offering promising treatment breakthroughs for cancer and other illnesses, generating greater investor interest more than 20 years after they were first commercialised. Antibodies are proteins that recognise foreign substances, known as antigens, attaching themselves to them to alert the rest of the human immune system. In 1975, scientists Georges Koehler and Cesar Milstein discovered how to produce them in a laboratory, which later earned them a Nobel Prize for medicine. Dozens of synthetic antibodies have since been developed. New antibody treatments to be used with chemotherapy have arrived on the scene in recent years. Most recently, a clinical trial of an antibody developed by pharmaceutical groups Daiichi Sankyo and AstraZeneca caught the attention of leading cancer specialists gathered at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual congress in Chicago this month. The treatment, Enhertu, was already authorised for breast cancer patients … [Read more...] about New antibody therapies fight cancer, drum up investment
Argentine courts to try Maradona doctors, nurses for homicide
Eight people who took care of soccer legend Diego Maradona will be tried in Argentina courts for homicide, according to a ruling released on Wednesday following an investigation into his November 2020 death due to cardiac arrest. In the 236-page document seen by Reuters , the judge in charge of the case questioned "the behaviors - active or by omission - of each of the accused which led to and contributed to the realization of the harmful result." The ruling said that eight people including doctors, nurses and a psychologist who cared for Maradona at the time of his death are accused of "simple homicide," a serious charge that means taking a life with intent. A medical board appointed to investigate Maradona's death concluded in 2021 that the soccer star's medical team acted in an "inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner." Maradona was considered one of the greatest soccer players in history, though the diminutive player nicknamed "Pelusa" for his long mane of hair and … [Read more...] about Argentine courts to try Maradona doctors, nurses for homicide
