Mekong Delta provinces step up COVID preventive measures

Border guards on patrol in Dong Thap (Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNS/VNA) - Mekong Delta provinces are tightening preventive measures against the COVID-19 pandemic , especially along land borders and coastal entry points, after two new cases were reported in the region. On February 28, a 37-year-old man in Hau Giang province who worked aboard a barge bringing cargo from Cambodia’s Phnom Penh tested positive and was quarantined immediately. He had arrived along with another man at the Thuong Phuoc International Sea Port in Dong Thap’s Hong Ngu district on February 26. Authorities have identified three people who came into close contact with the patient. Earlier, on February 23, the province’s COVID-19 task force quarantined a Vietnamese woman who had entered illegally from Cambodia with the disease. Authorities traced 11 people who had been in contact with her. Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Pham Thien Nghia has instructed relevant agencies to tighten control over border and coastal entry points. They should exchange information with their counterparts in neighbouring countries to make plans to preclude the spread of the disease, he said. Border guards should set up a hotline for locals to report people coming from COVID-hit areas, he added. Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Doan Tan Buu said everyone entering from Cambodia have to be quarantined and tested. The People’s Committee has approved the suspension of festivals and other events and closure of amusement places in Hong Ngu and Tan Hong districts and Hong Ngu city. Educational establishments will be closed from March 1 to 6. At the border in the provinces of Long An, An Giang and Kien Giang, soldiers are on duty on 24 hours a day at temporary checkpoints. Nguyen Van Ut, Chairman of the Long An Provincial People’s Committee, has instructed border guards to tighten control, warning that a single person could spread the disease if not quarantined …

Social distancing lifted from Vietnam’s COVID-19 epicenter

Strict social distancing measures will be lifted from the northern province of Hai Duong, Vietnam’s COVID-19 epicenter at present, from Wednesday, as the locality will focus on pandemic control while boosting socio-economic development. Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Pham Xuan Thang said at a meeting on Monday that extending the social distancing period would be unnecessary. The province will enter a new state and concentrate on the double goal of fighting COVID-19 and promoting socio-economic development, Thang continued. The COVID-19 situation in Hai Duong has been controlled well during the past 33 days, the official added. From 0:00 on Wednesday, strict social distancing measures under the prime minister’s directive No. 16 will end, and 12 localities in the province will be divided into two groups with suitable pandemic prevention and control regulations. Kim Thanh and Cam Giang Districts, Hai Duong City, and Kinh Mon Town shall implement precautious measures under the PM’s directive No. 15. The directive specifies that a gathering or meeting with more than 20 people in one room or a gathering of more than 10 people outside office buildings, schools, and hospitals is not allowed People should keep a safe distance of at least two meters in public places, while non-essential business and services will remain closed. All religious rites and activities with more than 20 participants in religious establishments as well as all cultural, sports, and recreational activities in public places are suspended. Meanwhile, Binh Giang, Gia Loc, Nam Sach, Ninh Giang, Thanh Ha, Thanh Mien, Tu Ky Districts, and Chi Linh City will implement measures under the prime minister’s directive No. 19. Vinh Long works towards sustainable export growth

(Photo: VNA) Vinh Long (VNA) - The Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long is striving to boost sustainable export growth during 2021-2025. The province has set the target to reel in 870 million USD from exports by 2025, with key export markets including ASEAN, Japan, China, China’s Taiwan, Russia, East European countries, Africa, the EU and the US. According to Director of the provincial Department of Industry and Trade Nguyen Trung Kien, seeing rice as a key export, Vinh Long plans to ship average 100,000-200,000 tonnes of high-quality rice per year abroad until 2025, and work to increase price of local rice while diversifying rice products to branch out markets. Holding a huge advantage of tra and basa fish farming, the province eyes to sell some 20,000 tonnnes of frozen tra fish to foreign markets by 2025. Kien said Vinh Long is making efforts to gain 35-40 million USD from exports of grape fruits, canned fruits, dried fruits, and vegetables by 2025, adding areas were zoned off for cultivation of vegetables and orchards such as grape fruit, orange, tangerine, longan, and mango, among others. Additionally, the locality targets 530-600 million USD in export revenue of leather footwear and garment-textile, and 60 million USD in export revenue of handicraft products by 2025. In a bid to realise the set goals, an array of measures were outlined, Kien said, stressing due attention will be paid to developing agricultural processing industry and finished goods to better the products’ value and their competitive edge in the market. Kien said along with support policies for local production, the province will improve technical services to promote mechanisation of agriculture, particularly post-harvest processing and preservation.
