7-year-old boy, Vietnam’s youngest heart transplant recipient, goes home

He is the youngest patient ever that has gone through such an operation in Vietnam. A month after the surgery, his condition has stabilized and he could walk and play normally. However, doctors at the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital, where the operation was done, reminded the family not to let the boy engage in too much physical activity or get emotional. The boy suffered rom cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that makes it hard for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body, and was at the final stage of heart failure. The condition forced him to take in high doses of cardiotonic drug regularly. It left him weak and thin, weighing just 16 kilos (35 pounds). Doctors diagnosed that a heart transplant was the only way to save him. Fortunately, the family of a young man who was brain dead after a traffic accident made the call to donate his heart. With all indicators of the donor and recipient matching, the hospital decided to give transplant priority to the boy, given his young age and very critical condition. Four days after the operation, the boy was able to get up, play, recognize all people and eat and drink on his own. "This huge favor, me and my boy would never ever forget," his mother said. Nguyen Huu Uoc, director of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center at the hospital, said the country receives very few organ donations from brain-dead patients each year and the chance to find a suitable heart to transplant for a child patient was almost zero. "And therefore when such a miracle happens and a life is saved, there is no bigger happiness for us doctors." …

Canal renovation project proposed to prevent flooding at Ho Chi Minh City airport

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport is seeking approval for a VND513 billion (US$22,370) canal renovation project to deal with flooding at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and its vicinity. The municipal transport department has submitted the plan on renovating Hy Vong Canal in Tan Binh District to the People’s Council for ratification. The project is aimed at improving rainwater drainage at Tan Son Nhat International Airport and other areas along the canal. The target areas cover about 1,052 hectares. The plan will also prevent flooding at public works and residential areas as well as helping improve the local environment and urbanscapes. The renovated canal will be 1,821 meters long, while two roads, about 10 meters wide each, will be built along both sides of the canal. Steel fences and lighting systems will also be installed along these roads. The project is estimated to cost VND513 billion, funded by the city’s budget, and is expected to be finished in 2022. The upgrade of Hy Vong Canal was previously included in the city’s flood risk management project, which was approved by the municipal People’s Committee in 2016. It was projected to get funding from the World Bank, but the international lender stopped sponsoring the project in 2017. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is considering funding a number of sub-projects under the city’s flood risk management project, including those dealing with drainage problems along Tham Luong - Ben Cat – Nuoc Len Canals.
