Masterise Group leads programmes to support the young affected by the pandemic

May 26, 2022 by vir.com.vn

Vietnam has reopened, but the impacts of the pandemic still linger on, particularly among impoverished children and the youth. In response to Humanitarian Month, Masterise Group has implemented community support activities focusing on three key areas including the living environment, education, and humanitarian relief as part of the long-term community initiative Build a Better Future. Children are one of the key focus groups of the Build a Better Future programme since they are the most vulnerable to external factors such as pandemics and natural disasters. Since 2020, four waves of outbreaks have struck Vietnam, leaving thousands of children without their families or the chance to go to school. According to statistics from the Institute of Labor and Social Sciences, more than 2,500 Vietnamese children have become orphaned as a result of the pandemic. Minutes before school attack, Texas gunman sent online warning

May 26, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

The gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, also sent a message on Tuesday saying he was going to shoot his grandmother and another one confirming he had done so, Abbott said at a news conference. Ramos' grandmother, whom the suspect shot in the face shortly before attacking the school, survived and called police. Ramos gave no warning except the online posts. After shooting his grandmother, he fled the home they shared and crashed his car near Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, about 80 miles (130 km) west of San Antonio. A school police officer approached him outside the building, according to officials, but no gunfire was exchanged. Authorities offered few additional details of that encounter, which is likely to become a focus of investigations, except that the suspect dropped a bag full of ammunition on the ground and ran toward the school when he saw the officer. Ramos then entered the school through a back door carrying an AR-15-style rifle and made his way down two … [Read more...] about Minutes before school attack, Texas gunman sent online warning

Indecent proposal: allowing 18-year-olds to gamble a bad idea

May 26, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

One rainy night five years ago, he left home, leaving his mentally disabled son afflicted by Agent Orange. His son-in-law was a gambler. He was in so deep that he turned to loan sharks for cash, borrowing so much he could not pay them back. Gangsters visited by uncle's house and threatened the entire family. When my uncle finally had enough, he chose to commit suicide. These kinds of stories are not unheard of in our country. Gambling addiction is real and it is vicious. It's all too easy to get lost in the sounds of music, the cheers of fellow gamblers, of shuffling cards and rolling dice. It brings out the worst in people. Once the money starts to flow, there is little that can stop it. A gambler will eventually take his or her family down with them, sooner or later. We Vietnamese are taught to cover for our family and the people we love. Gamblers will use that love to bring the people they care about to ruin. Ho Chi Minh City now wants to allow casinos in major tourist … [Read more...] about Indecent proposal: allowing 18-year-olds to gamble a bad idea

Implications for Vietnam in the bold transition to net-zero

May 26, 2022 by vir.com.vn

Bruce Delteil-Managing partner McKinsey & Company Vietnam All told, these 130 countries account for the majority of both emissions (88 per cent) and GDP (90 per cent). Few, however, have yet to back up these promises with decisive action. That is understandable because getting to net-zero will not be easy or without cost, and the world still needs to grow. What would it take to reach net zero? And what kind of economic and social adjustments might be required? In a recent report, McKinsey tried to answer these questions, based on a hypothetical scenario to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 developed by the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), a group of 105 central banks and financial supervisors. These are not predictions, but a simulation of what is required under the NGFS trajectory. The research looked specifically at energy and land-use systems, including power, industry, mobility, buildings, agriculture, and forestry. Together, these sectors … [Read more...] about Implications for Vietnam in the bold transition to net-zero
